Mit diesem Band der Forschungen in Ephesos wird ein Denkmal der griechischen Vergangenheit von Ephesos vorgelegt. Der Altar des Artemisions ist ein großer Hofaltar mit Säulenhalle, der Vorläufer der späteren großen Hofaltäre von Magnesia und Pergamon. Dieses Bauwerk ist bereits vor der Freilegung seines Fundamentes diskutiert und zeichnerisch rekonstruiert worden, da bereits im Jahre 1900 sekundär verbaut in der Marmorstraße beim ephesischen Theater Werkstücke zutage gekommen sind. Im vorliegenden Band wird zum ersten Mal die Dokumentation dieser Werkstücke aus den Archiven des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts vorgelegt und die Geschichte der Erforschung und aller Rekonstruktionen des Baues nachvollzogen. Außerdem werden neben den am Platz des Altares im Artemision selbst gefundenen Werkstücken auch die sekundär im Gelände der Johannesbasilika gefundenen Werkstücke der Architektur und Skulptur des Baues erstmals vollständig vorgelegt. This volume of the series ‘Forschungen in Ephesos’ presents a monument from Ephesos’ Greek past. The altar of the Artemision is a large construction with a screenwall and columns, a predecessor of later altars such as those at Magnesia and Pergamon. The building had already been discussed and reconstructed via drawings before the discovery of its foundations in 1965, since in 1900 building blocks belonging to it were found reused in the Marble street near the theatre in Ephesus. This volume documents the archival drawings and manuscripts of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, and presents the history of research as well as all proposed reconstructions of the monument. In addition to the building blocks found at the site of the altar itself, it has also been possible to include here for the first time the architectural and sculptural elements reused as spolia in the area of St. John’s Basilica.

Der Altar des Artemisions von Ephesos

The international symposium "Efeso paleocristiana e bizantina - Frühchristliches und byzantinisches Ephesos" was held on 22 to 24 February 1996 at the Historical Institute at the Austrian Cultural Institute in Rome to commemorate the centenary of Austrian archaeological excavations in Ephesos. The eleven articles by researchers from four countries present a number of details from Christian Ephesos: the origins of Christianity in this town, the early Christian and Byzantine sculpture, the wall painting in the churches of St. Mary and of St. John, John called Theologus, the Church of St. Mary and the Third Ecumenical Council, the church in the Artemision, details of the Church of St. John, the late antique Kuretes Street, epigraphic monuments and the medieval history of Ephesos. This publication expressively emphasises the importance of late antique-early Christian and early Byzantine monuments of Ephesos for the future research of this impressive town.
