In September 2015, a scientific conference was held in Graz, Austria, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Josef Poelt’s death. This scientist was one of the most renowned botanists of the last century who worked on many groups of lower plants, fungi and especially lichens. Of the contributions at the conference, 25 have been worked out and are presented in this book. They have been written mainly by former doctoral students of Josef Poelt or their scholars, or by some of his colleagues with whom he had cooperated. 

In the first contribution, a description of Josef Poelt’s life and scientific career, his fields of study, his colleagues, important research trips, his scientific oeuvre and its approval within the scientific community is given. This paper also gives a list of Poelt’s doctoral students and the many fields they worked on. In the second contribution, an overview of the history and development of cryptogamic research is presented in view of more and more refined analysis techniques and the resulting outcome. 

These two reviews are followed by a series of papers on taxonomical, ecological and applied aspects of saprobic, symbiotic or parasitic fungi, or of lichens, respectively. The papers are based on classical, ecological, geographical as well as molecular studies and offer insight into the distribution or into the phylogeny and taxonomy of selected groups of fungi and lichens. A few papers stress aspects on the state of research of groups of organisms in special regions of the world, while others deal with the state of research from a historical point of view. The final contribution deals with phylogenetic aspects in mosses.

The more than 700-page book is complemented by many informative illustrations, schemes and images.

Biodiversity and Ecology of Fungi, Lichens, and Mosses

Nach den „Rostpilzen Österreichs“ in zwei Teilen (POELT u. ZWETKO 1997 und ZWETKO 2000) wird nun in dem vorliegenden Band „Die Brandpilze Österreichs“ der Serie Catalogi Florae Austriae die zweite große Gruppe parasitischer Basidiomyceten behandelt. Auf der Basis von Herbarbelegen der letzten 160 Jahre, von Angaben ausgewiesener Brandpilzspezialisten sowie von umfangreicher Literatur werden das Vorkommen und die Verbreitung von 168 Arten aus 25 Gattungen von Brandpilzen, die in Österreich nachgewiesen wurden, mit kurzen Anmerkungen zu Taxonomie und Gesamtverbreitung der Taxa in Europa beschrieben. Angaben zum Vorkommen in den entsprechenden Höhenstufen und Naturräumen ergänzen diese Darstellung. Die Mehrzahl der für Österreich belegten Gattungen – 23 Gattungen mit 139 Arten – gehört zu den Ustilaginomycetes, die beiden Gattungen Microbotryum und Sphacelotheca mit 29 Arten gehören zu den Urediniomycetes. Weitere 166 Brandpilzarten, die bisher für Österreich nicht nachgewiesen werden konnten, deren Wirtspflanzen jedoch hier vorkommen und die in manchen Fällen bereits im grenznahen Ausland gefunden wurden, werden im Catalogus in gleicher Weise besprochen. Für zehn Brandpilzarten wurden Wirte, die in VºNKYs „European Smut Fungi“ (1994) nicht erwähnt sind, gefunden. Alle Taxa werden entsprechend ihrer Stellung im neuen System der Brandpilze angeordnet besprochen. Die Verbreitung der Gattung Anthracoidea – sie ist die für das Gebiet am besten dokumentierte Gattung – wird eingehend diskutiert. Für ausgewählte Arten werden Verbreitungskarten beigefügt. Karten für alle aus Österreich nachgewiesenen Arten, Fotografien sowie Artenlisten der Brandpilze für die Bundesländer und Naturräume Österreichs sind auf der dem Buch beigefügten CD enthalten.  An annotated checklist of smut fungi from Austria is presented. Altogether 168 species in 25 genera have been counted so far. The host plants of 166 further smut species occur in Austria. These species are listed also in the catalogus. Ten smut species are recorded on noteworthy host plants, which are not mentioned by VºNKY (1994). All genera recorded from the area are arranged in a synopsis showing their current position in the modern classification system for smut fungi. Grid maps for all species, photographies and check lists of smut fungi from the political and ecological regions of Austria are presented on the CD published with the book.
