Dieser Band beschäftigt sich mit der so genannten Tell el-Yahudiyeh Ware – schwarze Gefäße mit eingeritzter Dekoration, die während der Mittelbronzezeit im ganzen östlichen Mittelmeerraum verbreitet war. Im Wesentlichen handelt es sich zwar um einen Band der Tell el-Dabʿa Grabungsreihe, er bietet aber viel mehr als nur ein Verzeichnis der in Tell el-Dabʿa getätigten Funde dieser Warengruppe. Der Band beginnt mit einer Übersicht über die bisherigen Forschungen im Bereich dieser Keramikgruppe, wobei ersichtlich wird, dass das letzte maßgeblich mit dieser Thematik befasste Nachschlagewerk vor mehr als dreißig Jahren erschienen ist. Selbstverständlich sind in den dazwischen liegenden drei Jahrzehnten noch viele derartige Gefäße gefunden worden, unter anderem auch fast 700 Stück in el-Dabʿa. Der zweite Buchabschnitt beschäftigt sich mit einer typologischen Erörterung aller den Verfassern bekannten Tell el-Yahudiyeh Gefäßen. Diese sind sowohl chronologisch als auch geographisch, von ihrem jeweiligen Ursprung in der Levante bis zu ihrer Verbreitung durch den ganzen östlichen Mittelmeerraum, geordnet.

 This volume deals with the so-called Tell el-Yahudiyeh ware - black vessels with incised decoration - that is found throughout the Eastern Mediterranean regions. This type of pottery dates to the Middle bronze Age. This volume is part of the Tell el-Dabʿa excavation series, but it is more than a mere catalogue of the el-Dabʿa finds. The monograph opens with a review of previous research into this type of pottery. The last major reference work to deal with the topic appeared more than thirty years ago. Naturally, in the intervening three decades many more vessels of this type have come to light, including nearly 700 from the el-Dabʿa site alone. The second section of the book is devoted to a typological discussion of all Tell el-Yahudiyeh vessels known to the authors. These are arranged both chronologically and geographically, starting from their origins in the Levant and continuing to their widespread use throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. This is the first time that a chronological overview has been attempted. It has shown that there are several development threads, including Early Palestinian, Levanto-Egyptian, Late Palestinian and Late Egyptian groups. Each type of vessel is described in detail and accompanied by a map showing where examples have been found. The third and most important section comprises an in-depth catalogue of all 699 vessels that have been found at Tell el-Dabʿa. The stratigraphic context of these vessels is well documented, which helps not only to date the various types of Tell el-Yahudiyeh vessels, but also allows close correlations to be drawn between all sites where such vessels have been found. Indeed, the fine stratigraphy of Tell el-Dabʿa, which has been verified at a number of sites in the Eastern Mediterranean, allows Tell el-Yahudiyeh ware to be used as fine datum lines for establishing the relative chronology of the sites where it is found. A conclusion is followed by three chapters providing details about the Tell el-Yahudiyeh vessels that have been found at Ashkelon, Beth Shan and Tell 'Arqa. These three contributions, by L. Stager and R. Voss, A. Meier and R. Mullins, and H. Charaf and M. Ownby respectively, compare northern vessels to those from Tell el-Dabʿa. While this volume will be of particular interest to specialists in Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern ceramics, the ability to closely date this ware also means that the volume will also be of use to archaeologists working in Egypt, the Near East, Cyprus and the Aegean, as well as anyone attempting to provide datum lines between different sites in these areas.

Diese Arbeit versteht sich als Untersuchung von Grabbeigaben der Dritten Zwischenzeit (1070 - 664 vor Chr.) mit dem Ziel solche Funde akkurater als bisher datieren zu können. Dies wird durch die Zusammenstellung eines Korpus' aller bis dato publizierten Fundgruppen aus Gräbern der Dritten Zwischenzeit erreicht, aus denen verschiedene Objektkategorien van Grabbeigaben herausgegriffen und in Form van Typologien auf ihre chronologische Verwertbarkeit untersucht werden, um dadurch ihrerseits jene Gräber genauer zu datieren, in denen sie gefunden wurden.

Diese Typologien wurden schließlich kombiniert, um chronologische Entwicklungen der Dritten Zwischenzeit nachzuzeichnen.

Die ersten drei Kapitel beschäftigen sich mit der Untersuchung der Fundgruppen der Gräber der Dritten Zwischenzeit in geographischer Anordnung; Kapitel 1 widmet sich den Gräbem des Deltas, wobei die königlichen Gräber von Tanis eingeschlossen wurden. Hier findet sich erstaunlicherweise zum ersten Mal eine Zusammenstellung aller Funde dieses wichtigen Komplexes mit Museumsnummern. Kapitel 2 enthält die Fundgruppen der Gräber des Niltals aufgelistet von Norden nach Süden, wahrend Kapitel 3 sich vollständig mit den Gräbem aus Theben beschäftigt. Kapitel 4 untersucht verschiedene Kategorien von Grabbeigaben und bietet eine Synthese von typologischen und chronologischen Entwicklungen von Perlennetzen, Kanopengefallen, Kanopenkasten, Kanopensargen, Osiris- und Ptah-Sokar-Osiris- Figuren, Keramik, hölzerne Stelen, Uschebtis, Uschebtigefäßen und Uschebtikasten.

Kapitel werden demographische, soziale und regionale Unterschiede besprochen, die es dem Autor ermöglichen sechs verschiedene chronologische Phasen für die Grablegungen der Elite in Theben vorzuschlagen. Ein Appendix bietet einen Überblick über die Grabarchitektur der Dritten Zwischenzeit, eine umfassende Bibliographie und einen ausgedehnten Index der Funde mit ihren Museumsnummern This study is an investigation of funerary assemblages of the Third Intermediate Period (1070–664 BC) with a view to dating the objects of which these assemblages are composed more accurately than hitherto. This is done by providing a corpus of all published Third Intermediate Period tomb groups, and extracting from it a number of object typologies for individual grave goods with a view to assessing their value as a means of dating the tomb groups in which they are found. These typologies are then combined to chart a series of chronological developments throughout the period here under review. The first three chapters are devoted to discussions of the tomb groups arranged in geographical order; Chapter One dealing with the tombs found in the Delta, which includes the royal tombs at Tanis, where, surprisingly, for the first time, all the objects are listed with their museum numbers. Chapter Two deals with the tombs found in the Nile Valley, listed from north to south, whilst a separate chapter, Chapter Three, is devoted entirely to Thebes. Chapter Four discusses various types of grave goods, providing a synthesis of typological and chronological developments of bead nets, Canopic jars, Canopic chests, Canopic coffins, Osiris and Ptah-Sokar-Osiris figures, pottery, wooden stelae, ushabtis, shabti jars and shabti boxes. Additionally various other groups of objects – amulets, artificial eyes, baskets, corn mummies, faience vessels, fans, fishing nets, food offerings, inscribed bricks, ivory objects, jewellery, leather objects, linen articles, metal objects, pets, scarabs, shells, shoes and sandals, statue fragments, stone vessels, temple fragments, wigs and hairpins, whips, wooden objects and wreaths, are all described. In a concluding chapter, demographic, social and regional differences are discussed enabling the author to postulate six successive chronological phases for the elite burials at Thebes. An appendix on tomb architecture of the time, a comprehensive literature list and an all-inclusive index of museum numbers is also provided.

Abschnitt II enthält ein Generalkorpus der altägyptischen und levantinischen Keramik der späten 12. und 13. Dynastie.



Das Nebeneinander der altägyptischen und der syrisch-palästinensischen Mittelbronzezeitkultur während des späten Mittleren Reiches und der Zweiten Zwischenzeit wird hier erstmals detailliert definiert.
