Ronconi und C. Schiano veröffentlicht. Der byzantinischen Historiographie widmen sich drei Beiträge zur griechischen Bearbeitung des Ammianus Marcellinus (W. Treadgold), zu Menander Protector (F. Rance) und zu Georgios Synkellos (P. Varona). Ch. Simelidis greift u.a. eine in JOEB 69 initiierte Diskussion zu Symeon Metaphrastes mit neuen Ergebnissen auf. Neue Texteditionen mit Kommentaren werden zu Barlaam von Kalabrien (F. Acerbi, S. Di Mambro), zum ersten papyrologischen Beleg der Briefsammlung des Isidor von Pelusium (M. Thoma, A. Papathomas) sowie zu einer elegischen Klage eines Gelehrten (M. Tomadaki) präsentiert. Die Epigraphik ist mit einem inschriftlichen Epigramm des Theodoros Prodromos in Naxos vertreten (Th. Konstantellou). Den historischen Schwerpunkt runden zwei Beiträge zur Zwangsarbeit in kaiserlichen Textilwerkstätten (A. C. Kelley) und zur Frage des Fastens (D. Krausmüller) ab. Rezensionen zu aktuellen Neuerscheinungen beschließen den Band.

In this volume guest editors Q. Edward Wang 王晴佳 and Li Longguo 李隆国 present articles pertaining to empires in phases of change. The empires under discussion are the late Quin/Han, Tang and Song Dynasties, Medieval Nomadic Empires, the Roman Empire and the Merovingian and Carolingian Dynasties. The authors focus on the ways that imperial power was exercised, delineated, consolidated, represented and expressed in times of power transitions or ruptures.

Many of the contributions were originally published by our guest editors in a Chinese volume entitled Duanlie yu zhuanxing: diguo zhihou de OuYa lishi yu shixue, 断裂与转型：帝国之后的欧亚历史与史学 [Between Empires: Rupture, Transformation and Transmission], (Shanghai, 2017). Some authors replaced their papers with new ones, while many reworked their original versions. The entire volume will be published in two instalments. The first in December 2024, the second in early 2025.

Das Register des 16. Pontifikatsjahrs Innocenz’ III. enthält 182 Briefe aus der päpstlichen Kanzlei, die sich an unterschiedliche Empfänger in ganz Europa wie im Nahen Osten richten. Dominierende Themen sind Kreuzzugs- und Konzilsvorbereitungen und der Kampf gegen die Häretiker in Südfrankreich sowie der Ausgleich mit dem König von England und organisatorische Fragen im Baltikum. Weitere Schreiben befassen sich mit den politischen und kirchlichen Verhältnissen von Süditalien bis Skandinavien, Ehesachen und besitzrechtlichen Fragen, Privilegien und Unterschutzstellungen für Bistümer und Klöster, Bistumsangelegenheiten und kirchenrechtlichen Entscheidungen verschiedenster Art, umstrittenen Wahlen und Disziplinarfragen, die Einblicke in die großen wie die alltäglichen Probleme der Kirche und der Laien um 1200 erlauben. Nach dem 13., 14. und 15. gehört auch der 16. Jahrgang zu den Bänden, die nicht als Originalregister, sondern in einer an der Kurie gefertigten Abschrift aus der Mitte des 14. und dem Druck des französischen Gelehrten Bosquet aus dem 17. Jahrhundert überliefert sind. Der Band bietet eine kritische Edition, einen ausführlichen Sachkommentar, Hinweise auf Textparallelen und Zitate aus der Bibel, dem kanonischen und römischen Recht sowie theologischen, liturgischen und klassischen Texten und gibt die Dekretalenüberlieferung der Briefe an. Einleitend werden die Handschrift und die Einrichtung der Edition beschrieben. Der Band wird durch mehrere Indices erschlossen. The 16th volume of the edition of pope Innocent III’s chancery registers is containing 182 letters addressed to recipients all over Europe and in the Middle East. Special attention is paid to the preparation of the crusade and the council, the fight against heresy in Southern France, the reconciliation of the king of England and organisation of the Baltic church. Other letters are dealing with political and ecclesiastical issues from Southern Italy to Scandinavia, matrimonial matters and property questions, privileges and confirmations of rights and possessions of bishoprics and monasteries, matters concerning the episcopate and litigation within the Church, such as contested elections or disciplinary problems, and a variety of decisions offering insights in major and minor problems of the church and the people around 1200. As the 13th, 14th and 15th volume, the register of Innocent’s sixteenth year of pontificate is one of the volumes transmitted not as original but as a copy written at the Curia in mid-14th century and as print published by the French scholar Bosquet in the 17th century. The volume is offering the critical edition of the texts, ample historical comments, identifications of textual parallels and quotations from the Bible, Canon and Roman law, theological, liturgical and classical texts, and the letters' insertion in decretal collections. In the introduction, the manuscript and the editory principles are described, and several indices help to access the contents.

Die Register Innocenz’ III., 16. Band

Das 1142 gegründete Augustiner Chorherrenstift Neustift verwahrt heute 92 mittelalterliche Handschriften. Diese wurden von einem interdisziplinären Expertenteam nach den Richtlinien der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften erstmalig umfassend erschlossen. Der sämtliche kodikologische Aspekte berücksichtigende Katalog wird ergänzt durch eine umfangreiche Einleitung, Register und Anhänge. Zumal etwa 50 Handschriften seit 1809 an der Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Tirol in Innsbruck aufbewahrt werden, versteht sich die Publikation als wesentlicher Beitrag zur virtuellen Zusammenführung des einstigen Neustifter Bestandes sowie als wichtige Grundlagenarbeit für weiterführende Forschungen. The Augustinian Monastery of Neustift, founded in 1142, houses 92 medieval manuscripts in its collection today. These have become accessible for the first time through the work of an interdisciplinary team of experts, in accordance with the guidelines of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The catalogue, which takes all codicological aspects into account, is supplemented by an extensive introduction, indices and appendices. Around 50 Neustift manuscripts have been kept at the University and State Library of Tyrol in Innsbruck since 1809. Therefore, the publication is an essential contribution to the virtual reconstruction of the former Neustift library as well as important basic work for further research.

“medieval worlds” provides a forum for comparative, interdisciplinary and transcultural studies of the Middle Ages. Its aim is to overcome disciplinary boundaries, regional limits and national research traditions in Medieval Studies, to open up new spaces for discussion, and to help developing global perspectives. We focus on the period from c. 400 to 1500 CE but do not stick to rigid periodization. medieval worlds is open to submissions of broadly comparative studies and matters of global interest, whether in single articles, companion papers, smaller clusters, or special issues on a subject of global/comparative history. We particularly invite studies of wide-ranging connectivity or comparison between different world regions. Apart from research articles, medieval worlds publishes ongoing debates and project and conference reports on comparative medieval research.

In this volume S. Liccardo and S. Wabnitz provide an in-depth study of Western and Chinese sources on marriage strategies, especially levirate in the early Middle Ages, additionally drawing on the latest results of ancient DNA analysis and anthropological insights.

Our thematic cluster “Moving Jobs: Occupational Identity and Motility in the Middle Ages” focuses on the mobility of people in connection with their work and offers case studies on the Southern Tarim Basin (T. Høisæter), central Greece (G. Wu), Italy (A. Pazienza) and southern Germany (W. North). Our second thematic cluster “Cultural Brokers. Investigating a Concept” in which contributors explore this possible approach to agents of knowledge transfer in the context of their disciplines: K. Schaeffer in Tibetan Buddhist history, Ch. Pecchia in Colonial South Asia, C. Grifoni in early medieval Francia and C. Gantner in early medieval Italy/Byzantium. Introductions to both clusters provide methodological context and comparative insights.

Der Ostalpenraum war ab der Spätantike und im frühen Mittelalter eine Kontaktzone unterschiedlicher Herrschaftsgebiete. Als ehemaliger Teil des Römischen Reiches ist er im 7. und 8. Jahrhundert vor allem als Grenzregion zwischen dem fränkischen und awarischen Reich bekannt, in der sich im 8. Jahrhundert die Karantanen formieren. Trotz dieser Bedeutung sind allerdings nur wenige und meist späte Quellen überliefert, was eine genaue Darstellung dieses Raumes erschwert. Im vorliegenden Band werden anhand komparatistischer und interdisziplinärer Studien neue Perspektiven der Geschichte des Ostalpenraumes aufgezeigt. From Late Antiquity and in the Early Middle Ages, the Eastern Alpine region was a contact zone of various dominions. In the 7th and 8th century, the former part of the Roman Empire was known primarily as a border region between the Frankish Empire and the Avar Khaganate, where the Carantanians established themselves in the 8th century. Despite its importance, however, only a few and mostly late sources are preserved, which makes it difficult to describe this region in an accurate way. The contributions gathered in this volume edited by Maximilian Diesenberger, Stefan Eichert and Katharina Winckler apply comparative and interdisciplinary studies to present new perspectives on the history of the Eastern Alpine region.

Mit dieser zweibändigen Edition werden erstmals sämtliche erhaltenen Schriften des Gregorios Antiochos (ca. 1130 – ca. 1200) der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Antiochos, der in den letzten Jahrzehnten verstärkt Beachtung gefunden hat, war ein Rhetor und hochstehender Beamter der Komnenenzeit, dessen Lob-, Grab- und Trostreden sowie Epistulae bedeutende literarische und sprachgeschichtliche Dokumente sind und einen vorzüglichen Einblick in die Kultur und Gesellschaft seiner Epoche bieten. Die mit einer ausführlichen Einleitung versehene Edition enthält insgesamt 35 Schriften des Antiochos, wovon sieben bis dato unveröffentlicht sind, mitsamt deutscher Übersetzung und Index nominum propriorum, Index locorum, Incipit- und Desinit-Register. With the two volumes of this edition all preserved writings of Gregorios Antiochos (ca. 1130 – ca. 1200) are made accessible to the public for the first time. Antiochos, who has attracted increasing attention in the last decades, was a rhetor and prominent official of the Komnenan period, whose panegyrics, funeral orations, consolatory speeches and letters are important literary and linguistic documents, that provide an excellent insight into the culture and society of his time. The edition, equipped with an extensive introduction, contains overall 35 of Antiochosʼ texts, of which seven have remained unedited until now, with a german translation, index nominum propriorum, index locorum, incipit and desinit index.

Die im vorliegenden Band behandelten byzantinischen Provinzen Bithynien und Hellespont umfassen den ganzen Nordwesten Kleinasiens. Wegen ihrer Lage gegenüber der Reichshauptstadt Konstantinopel kommt ihnen besondere Bedeutung zu. So galten die asiatischen Küsten des Bosporos und des Marmarameeres als Vorstädte der Hauptstadt, wo die Kaiser und die Oberschicht ihre Paläste und Villen bauten sowie viele Kirchen und Klöster gründeten. Die in Bithynien und zu einem geringeren Teil in Hellespont erzeugten landwirtschaftlichen Produkte trugen beträchtlich zur Versorgung Konstantinopels mit Lebensmitteln bei.

Diese engen Beziehungen zwischen Bithynien und Hellespont und Konstantinopel schlagen sich in einer großen Zahl schriftlicher Quellen nieder, in denen viele im bearbeiteten Gebiet gelegene Orte genannt werden. Ziel des Bandes ist es, mit Hilfe der schriftlichen Quellen, von Reiseberichten ab der frühen Neuzeit, von archäologischen Dokumentationen und eigenen Beobachtungen im Land ein unter historisch-geographischem Blickwinkel erstelltes Bild des Gebietes zu zeichnen. Einen Überblick über die Grenzen des bearbeiteten Gebietes, über die Geographie, Geschichte, Kirchengeschichte, die Verkehrsverbindungen und die wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse bieten die einleitenden Kapitel. Im Hauptteil werden in Form eines alphabetischen Katalogs die Geschichte und/oder die archäologisch faßbaren Reste aller byzanischen Siedlungen, Burgen, Kirchen und Klöster sowie der Berge und Flüsse dargestellt und im Tafelteil in Auswahl durch Photos dokumentiert. Dem Band wird eine Karte im Maßstab 1 : 800.000 beigegeben, die nicht nur das gesamte in diesem Band bearbeitete Gebiet zeigt, sondern auch das nördlich des Marmarameeres gelegene Ostthrakien (bearbeitet von A. Külzer als Band 12 der TIB), so daß die gesamte „Marmarameerregion“ mit Zentrum Konstantinopel dargestellt ist. Diese Karte wird durch drei Detailkarten in größerem Maßstab für besonders dicht besiedelte Gebiete ergänzt. In this volume the Byzantine provinces of Bithynia and Hellespont are treated. They comprise the whole northwest of Asia Minor. The region is especially important because of its position across from the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The shores opposite Constantinople were considered its suburbs, where the emperors and the aristocracy built their palaces and villas and founded many monasteries and churches. Products of agriculture from Bithynia, to a lesser part also from Hellespont, contributed considerably to the provision of the capital with food.

The close relations between Bithynia and Hellespont with Constantinople result in a great number of written sources that mention many settlements in the area under consideration. The present volume aims to draw a picture of the region from the point of view of the Historical Geography. For this purpose, written sources are used as well as travel reports from the Early Modern Period onwards, archaeological documentation and observations of the author in the country. In the introductory chapters, the borders of the area, its geography, history, church history, lines of communication and economic conditions are treated by way of an overview. In the main part, the history and/or the archaeological remains of all Byzantine settlements, fortresses, churches and monasteries as well as of mountains and rivers are presented in an alphabetical catalogue. A choice of characteristic landscapes and of ruins and other remains are shown on photographical tables. Added to the volume is a map (scale 1 : 800.000) that shows not only the area comprised in this volume but also the region north of the Sea of Marmara (treated as Ostthrakien by A. Külzer, volume 12 of the TIB), so that the entire “Region of the the Sea of Marmara” with its centre Constantinople is displayed. Densely inhabited areas are also shown on three maps with larger scales.

Das vorliegende Werk von Antonio Rigo legt das Augenmerk auf das Schlüsseljahr in der letzten Epoche des Byzantinischen Reiches: 1347, als der Bürgerkrieg, der das Reich über Jahre heimsuchte, begleitet von religiösen Unstimmigkeiten und gesellschaftlichen Unruhen, endlich endete. Das Buch bietet eine Rekonstruktion der kirchlichen Ereignisse und der Dynamik zwischen unterschiedlichen beteiligten Gruppen, während es neben anderen kleineren Texten auch eine kritische Edition von zwei Dokumenten aus dem Sommer 1347 vorlegt: das Tomus der Gegner und jenes der Absetzung des Matthäus von Ephesos.  Focusing on a key year in the last age of Byzantium – 1347, when the civil war that had ravaged the Empire for four years, accompanied by religious dissent and social unrest, finally ended – the book of Antonio Rigo offers an overall reconstruction of the ecclesiastical events and dynamics between the different groups involved, while also presenting a critical edition of two documents from the summer of 1347: the Tome of the opponents and that of the deposition of Matthew of Ephesus, followed by other minor pieces.

Die einmal jährlich erscheinende Zeitschrift wurde 1951 als Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinischen Gesellschaft gegründet; mit dem Wechsel in den Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften wurde sie 1973 (ab Band 22) in Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinistik umbenannt. Sie stellte zunächst einerseits das Publikationsorgan von Byzantinist:innen Österreichs dar – stets interdisziplinär offen zu allen Nachbarwissenschaften –, andererseits ein Fachmedium, das international Beiträge zum Fachgebiet nach einem Begutachtungsverfahren veröffentlicht(e). Mittlerweile zählt das Jahrbuch zu einer der führenden Zeitschriften der Byzantinistik international.



Mit Band 68 (2018) führte die Zeitschrift die thematische Bündelung von Themen in Cluster mit einer kurzen Einleitung ein. So wurden etwa Schwerpunkte den Autoren Theodoros Studites oder Georgios Pisides gewidmet.



Die starke internationale Nachfrage, aber auch Kriterien der Indizierung haben zu einer erneuten Namensänderung 2021 geführt: Ab Band 71 trägt die Zeitschrift den Doppeltitel Journal of Byzantine Studies (JOEB) / Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinistik.



Inhaltlich umfasst die Zeitschrift Neueditionen oder Ersteditionen griechischer Texte (auf der Quellbasis von Siegeln über Inschriften zu Handschriften) mit philologischen und historischen Kommentaren ebenso wie Studien jedweder wissenschaftlichen Fokussierung, einschließlich Archäologie und Kunstgeschichte. Ein besonderes Anliegen ist der Zeitschrift dabei auch die interdisziplinäre Bandbreite und die Einbeziehung von Nachbarkulturen im politisch-kulturellen Austausch mit Byzanz.



Die aktuelle Ausgabe erscheint mit neuem Cover und wurde im Zuge der Indizierung um den englischen Titel Journal of Byzantine Studies erweitert. Sie umfasst zehn Beiträge von F. Acerbi, P. Andrist – C. Macé – S. und D. Fahl, J. Cotsonis, A. M. Cuomo, Ch. Gastgeber, A. Ibáñez Chacón, S. Kyriakidis, T. Martínez Manzano, A. Rhoby und J. L. Willson. Rezensionen zu aktuellen Neuerscheinungen runden den Band ab. Die Hälfte der Beiträge erschließt neue Texte und präsentiert kritische Editionen. The journal, which appears once a year, was founded in 1951 as “Yearbook” of the Austrian Byzantine Society (Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinischen Gesellschaft); with the change to the publishing house of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, it was renamed in 1973 (beginning with volume 22) as “Yearbook” of Austrian Byzantine Studies (Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinistik). Initially, it was the publication medium of Austrian researchers in Byzantine studies - always open to all related disciplines - while also serving as a specialist journal that published international contributions to Byzantine studies after a peer review process. Since then, the journal has become one of the leading international journals of Byzantine studies.



With volume 68 (2018), the journal introduced the thematic concentration of topics into clusters with a short introduction. For example, clusters were dedicated to the authors Theodoros Studites or Georgios Pisides.



The strong international demand, but also indexing criteria, led to another name change in 2021: Beginning with volume 71, the journal has the double title Austrian Journal of Byzantine Studies (JOEB) / Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinistik.



In terms of content, the journal includes new editions or first editions of Greek texts (based on seals, inscriptions and manuscripts) accompanied by philological and historical comments as well as studies of any academic focus, including art history and archaeology. A particular concern of the journal is broad interdisciplinarity and the inclusion of neighboring cultures in political-cultural interaction with Byzantium.

Das griechische Dossier über den Heiligen Christodulos, den Stifter des Johannes Prodromos-Klosters auf Patmos (1088), enthält vier Texte (drei „Vitae“ und die „Narratio“ eines Wunders), die im Zeitraum von zwei Jahrhunderten nach dem Tod des Heiligen von Mitgliedern seiner monastischen Gemeinde verfasst wurden. Sie sind nicht nur für die Rekonstruktion des Lebens eines der bedeutendsten byzantinischen Heiligen wichtig, sondern stellen auch eine einzigartige Quelle für die politische und soziale Geschichte des Byzantinischen Reiches und des östlichen Mittelmeerraumes vom ausgehenden 11. bis zum 13. Jahrhundert dar. Trotz ihrer großen Bedeutung blieben diese Texte bis heute fast unbekannt, weil sie in einer kaum mehr zugänglichen Edition des 19. Jahrhunderts enthalten sind, die auschließlich für die Mönche und BesucherInnen des Johannes Prodromos-Klosters bestimmt war. 

Die neue Edition, die von einem kritischen und die gesamte Überlieferung umfassenden Quellenapparat sowie von einem Namens- und einem Quellenindex ergänzt wird, soll sowohl Historiker/innen als auch Literarwissenschaftler/innen von Nutzen sein: Den Historiker/innen wird eine wichtige Quelle für die Geschichte der Periode der Kaiserdynastie der Komnenen eröffnet, den Forscher/innen der byzantinischen Literatur werden vier – in sprachlicher und literaturgeschichtlicher Hinsicht – wichtige Texte präsentiert, die Zeugen von drei verschiedenen Sichtweisen über Heiligkeit in Byzanz vor dem Vierten Kreuzzug sind. 

In der Einführung werden mehrere literarische, historische und textkritische Aspekte des Dossiers erörtert, umfangreiche Regesten auf Englisch führen eine breitere Leserschaft in die Texte ein. The Greek dossier on St. Christodoulos, founder of the monastery of Patmos (1088), consists of four texts, three vitae and a narrative of a miracle, all written within roughly two centuries after the saint’s death by brethren of his monastic community. They are not only important for the reconstruction of the course of life of one of the most famous Byzantine saints, but they are also a unique source for the political and social history of Byzantium and the Eastern Mediterranean from the late 11th to the 13th century. Despite their great importance, these texts have remained almost unknown until today because they are contained in a 19th century edition that is hardly accessible any more and was intended exclusively for the monks and visitors of the John Prodromos Monastery.

The new critical edition, which is accompanied by a critical and exhaustive apparatus of sources as well as an index of personal names and of all passages of previous authors quoted or referred to in the texts, will be appreciated by historians and literary scholars alike. Historians will now have at their disposal an important source for the history of the Comnenian period and beyond, while scholars interested in Byzantine literature will have the opportunity to examine in depth four important and rather complex documents, which offer three different visions of the phenomenon of sanctity in Byzantium at the eve of the Fourth Crusade. 

The introduction discusses several literary, historical and text-critical aspects of the dossier. Extensive summaries in English make these texts available to a wider audience for the first time.

Vitae et Miracula Sancti Christoduli Patmensis

Der "Nomos Georgikos" („Landwirtschaftsgesetz“) ist auf dem Gebiet der Landnutzung die einzige eigenständige Regelung der Byzantiner mit gesetzesähnlichem Charakter. Er beeinflusste die Gesetzgebung in Byzanz und in vielen Staaten Ost- und Südosteuropas bis in die frühe Neuzeit. 

Der "Nomos Georgikos" reguliert Vorgänge in der Landwirtschaft, der Viehzucht und der Forstwirtschaft. Die Nichterwähnung bestimmter Pflanzen und Tiere lässt Schlüsse auf die Großräume zu, in welchen er seine Wurzeln hatte. Die erhaltene schriftliche Fassung dürfte um die Mitte des 8. Jahrhunderts im Umfeld der Entstehung des Gesetzbuches "Ekloge" zu datieren sein.  The "Nomos Georgikos" ("Agricultural Law") is the only independent byzantine regulation of land use with quasi-legal character. It influenced until the early modern period the legislation in Byzantium and in many states of Eastern and South-East Europe. 

The "Nomos Georgikos" regulates procedures in the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry. The non-mention of certain plants and animals allows to draw conclusions regarding the greater areas of the laws origins. The text that has came down to us, probably should be dated to the legislative framework of the "Ecloga", in the middle of the 8th century.

Nomos Georgikos 

Mit der Edition der 57 Briefe des fragmentarisch erhaltenen dritten Jahrganges der Kanzleiregister Papst Innocenz' III., die den Zeitraum von September 1200 bis Februar 1201 abdecken, wird die Lücke geschlossen, die seit langem in der Reihe der vom Österreichischen Historischen Institut in Rom und vom Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung in Wien herausgegebenen Kanzleiregister des wohl bedeutendsten der mittelalterlichen Päpste bestand. Damit wird der mangelhafte Text der von Migne herausgegebenen Patrologia Latina durch eine allen wissenschaftlichen Ansprüchen genügende kritische Edition ersetzt, die dem Muster der bisher erschienenen 14 Bände der Registeredition folgt. Neben der sorgfältigen Herstellung des Textes nach der originalen Handschrift des Archivio Apostolico Vaticano (Reg. Vat. 5), enthält der Band einen ausführlichen kritischen Apparat mit Regest, bisherigen Druckorten, Identifizierung der Orte und Personen und der geschichtlichen Hintergründe, Feststellung der Bezüge zum kanonischen und römischen Recht, Identifikation der im Text vorkommenden Bibelstellen und andere Textvorlagen. Die Adressaten der Briefe waren in der gesamten damaligen christlichen Welt von Skandinavien bis Süditalien, von Irland bis ins byzantinische Reich breit gestreut. Der angekündigte zweite Teil wird die Rekonstruktion des fehlenden Teiles des dritten Registerjahrganges enthalten.

Das im 6. Jahrhundert im Auftrag von Kaiser Justinian erbaute Katharinenkloster in der Sinai-Wüste beherbergt die älteste christliche Klosterbibliothek mit einer lückenlosen Geschichte. Dieses griechisch-orthodoxe Kloster besitzt eine der größten Handschriftensammlungen der Welt mit insgesamt über 4500 Codices. Darunter befindet sich eine bedeutende Anzahl von Palimpsest-Handschriften (über 170), in denen elf verschiedene Sprachen in den ausradierten Schichten als "scriptiones inferiores" bezeugt sind: Sie spiegeln die lange Geschichte und den multikulturellen Charakter des Katharinenklosters wider. 

Dieses Buch liegt an der Schnittstelle zwischen der Erforschung von Palimpsesthandschriften und der Untersuchung byzantinisch-griechischer Euchologia (Gebetbücher), mit einem zusätzlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Geschichte der Sinai-Bibliothek. Die Studie bietet die erste vollständige Bestandsaufnahme der griechischen Palimpseste, die im Katharinenkloster aufbewahrt werden, einschließlich einer Liste neu identifizierter "membra disiecta sinaitica". Im zweiten Teil erfolgt die detaillierte Beschreibung und kulturhistorische Analyse dreier ausgewählter Euchologia (Sin. gr. 960, Sin. gr. 962, Sin. gr. 966), die auf wiederverwendetem Pergament geschrieben sind. Diese Beschreibungen beruhen auf der Arbeit an den Originalhandschriften, die noch nicht im Hinblick auf ihre "scriptiones inferiores" untersucht wurden. Diese Studie bietet somit neue Erkenntnisse zur Geschichte und Entwicklung der Handschriftensammlung am Berg Sinai im Laufe der Jahrhunderte. Built in the 6th century by order of Emperor Justinian, the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai desert preserves the oldest Christian monastic library with an uninterrupted history. This Greek Orthodox Monastery houses a significant collection of manuscripts in the world, including a large number of palimpsest manuscripts (over 170). Eleven different languages are attested in their erased layers as "scriptiones inferiores": they reflect the long history and the multicultural nature of the Sinai shrine. This book lies at the intersection of palimpsest studies and the investigation of the Byzantine Greek Euchologia (prayer books), with an additional focus on the history of the Sinai library. This study offers the first inventory of the Greek palimpsests preserved at the Monastery of Saint Catherine, including a list of newly identified "membra disiecta sinaitica." The second part contains the detailed description and historical analysis of three selected Sinai Euchologia (Sin. gr. 960, Sin. gr. 962, Sin. gr. 966) written on recycled parchment, which have never been studied with regard to their "scriptiones inferiores". The collected material contributes to our knowledge of the history and development of the Sinai collection of manuscripts over the centuries.
