BOOK LAUNCH
Der Leopoldstädter Tempel – Eine Dokumentation
by Hermann David Karplus
In this insightful work, Hermann David Karplus offers a detailed portrayal of Jewish life in 19th-century Vienna. Drawing on newly rediscovered archival materials, he examines the social circumstances of the Jewish community, the history of the synagogue’s construction, and the notable controversies surrounding ritual practices, including the debate over whether or not to play the organ during services.
The book also provides biographical sketches of key community figures -- rabbis, preachers, cantors, and other officials, bringing to life a formative era in Viennese Jewish history. Karplus’s careful research reveals documents and architectural plans, once thought lost and now uncovered in the archives of the Vienna Jewish Community in Jerusalem.
