Der vorliegende Band präsentiert in acht Fallstudien aus der chinesischen und japanischen Vormoderne, Moderne und Gegenwart eine interdisziplinäre Auseinandersetzung zum Stellenwert von Autorität an den Schnittstellen von Religion und Politik. Die Themen der einzelnen Beiträge reichen von der Familienchronik der Fujiwara im Japan des 8. Jahrhunderts bis zur Konkurrenz von konfuzianischen und christlichen Körperschaften im gegenwärtigen China; von nomenklatorischen und institutionellen Fragen zu Ämtern und ihren Trägern am Rande des chinesischen Kaiserreichs bis zum Verhältnis zwischen universitärer Geschichtsschreibung und Shintō-Mythologie während der Herausbildung des modernen japanischen Nationalstaates. Die Beiträge eröffnen dabei sowohl theoretische als auch empirische Zugänge zu den jeweiligen historischen und kulturellen Entwicklungen. Ein gemeinsamer Schwerpunkt liegt insbesondere auf den institutionellen, rechtlichen und akademischen Verflechtungen, welche die unterschiedlichen Bemühungen begleiten, religiöse von politischen Funktionen abzulösen beziehungsweise solche Unterscheidungen etwa im Rahmen einer Politisierung vormoderner Traditionen wieder rückzubauen. Through eight case studies from premodern, modern, and contemporary China and Japan, this volume presents an interdisciplinary exploration of the manifold relations between religion and politics in the formation of authority. It combines theoretical with empirical interests and follows different approaches to a multitude of historical and cultural settings in order to investigate the institutional, legal, and academic entanglements that shape and constitute authority. The contents of the individual contributions range from the chronicles of the Fujiwara family written in 8th century Japan to the contentions between Confucian and Christian institutions in present-day China; from issues in the nomenclature and institutionalization of offices on the fringes of the Chinese empire to controversies on the relation between academic historiography and Shintō mythology during the emergence of the modern Japanese nation-state. The arguments focus on and rigorously analyze various historical attempts at distinguishing religious from political functions as well as the ideologically motivated endeavors at blurring such distinctions with special regard to the politicization of premodern traditions.

Interactions between Religious and Political Authority

Die Pramanasamuccayatika Jinendrabuddhis (ca. 710–770 n. Chr.) ist ein ausführlicher Kommentar zum Pramanasamuccaya Dignagas (ca. 480–540 n. Chr.), der traditionell als Ausgangstext der buddhistischen Schule der Logik und Epistemologie in Indien betrachtet wird. Der vorliegende Band beinhaltet eine diplomatische und kritische Ausgabe des Sanskrittexts des sechsten und letzten Kapitels dieses Kommentars, in dessen Mittelpunkt die Theorie der falschen Einwände steht, die nach dem siebten Jahrhundert kaum noch von buddhistischen Logikern in Indien diskutiert wurde. Jinendrabuddhis umfangreicher Kommentar stellt daher nicht nur für die Forschung der buddhistischen logischen Schule, sondern auch für die indische Philosophie im Allgemeinen eine sehr wichtige Quelle dar. Die in diesem Band vorgelegte diplomatische Edition basiert auf dem einzigen verfügbaren Sanskrit-Manuskript der Pramanasamuccayatika, das sich in Lhasa, Tibet, befindet. Der Zugang zu Kopien dieses Manuskripts wurde erst in der letzten Zeit ermöglicht. Bei der Erstellung der kritischen Edition wurden zusätzlich die tibetische Übersetzung sowie weitere relevante Materialien herangezogen. Der kritisch edierte Sanskrittext des Kommentars ermöglicht nicht nur eine präzisere Interpretation der Theorie Dignagas bezüglich der falschen Einwände, sondern beleuchtet auch Details der Geschichte der buddhistischen Tradition der indischen Dialektik vor der Zeit Dignagas. Die Ausgaben der ersten zwei von den insgesamt sechs Kapiteln der Pramanasamuccayatika wurden 2005 und 2012 ebenso in der Reihe „Sanskrit Texts from the Tibetan Autonomous Region“ (STTAR) veröffentlicht. Jinendrabuddhi’s (approx. 710–770 CE) Pramanasamuccayatika is a detailed commentary on Dignaga’s (approx. 480–540) Pramanasamuccaya, the text that traditionally marked the foundation of the Buddhist school of logic and epistemology in India. The current volume presents a diplomatic and critical Sanskrit edition of the sixth and final chapter of Jinendrabuddhi’s commentary, where the focus is the theory of “false rejoinders”, a dialectical question rarely treated by Indian Buddhist logicians later than the seventh century. Jinendrabuddhi’s voluminous commentary is thus a highly important source, not only for research on the development of the Buddhist school of logic, but also on Indian philosophy in general. The diplomatic edition presented in the current volume is based on a single extant Sanskrit manuscript of the Pramanasamuccayatika kept in Lhasa, Tibet. Access to copies of this manuscript has been made available only recently. To produce the critical edition, also the Tibetan translation of Jinendrabuddhi’s commentary and other relevant materials were taken into consideration. Not only does the critically edited text enable a more exact interpretation of Dignaga’s theory of “false rejoinders” than has hitherto been possible, it also illuminates details regarding the history of the Indian Buddhist tradition of dialectics prior to Dignaga’s time. Editions of the first two of the Pramanasamuccayatika’s six chapters have already been published, in 2005 and 2012, in the current series “Sanskrit Texts from the Tibetan Autonomous Region” (STTAR).

Jinendrabuddhi's Viśālāmalavatī Pramāṇasamuccayaṭīkā

Der als Gāyatrī oder Sāvitrī bekannte Mantra (Ṛgveda III 62.10) gehört zu den am häufigsten rezitierten Texten der Menschheit. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde dieser Text nicht nur als Mutter der Veden, also der ältesten religiösen Literatur Südasiens, personifiziert, sondern sogar als Göttin verehrt. Heutzutage gilt er vielen als der wichtigste, heiligste oder wirkmächtigste Mantra überhaupt.

In „Gāyatrī: Mantra and Mother of the Vedas“ rekonstruiert Dominik A. Haas erstmals die Geschichte des Gāyatrī-Mantra von ca. 1000 v.u.Z. bis 1000 n.u.Z. Er zeigt, wie aus einer unscheinbaren Strophe ein Wahrzeichen des brahmanisch geprägten Hinduismus wurde und welche Prozesse zu seiner Vergöttlichung führten. Dazu unterzieht er nicht nur Passagen aus mehr als einhundert Quellentexten auf Vedisch und Sanskrit einer philologisch-historischen Analyse, sondern stützt sich auch auf religionswissenschaftliche Perspektiven und Erkenntnisse.

The mantra known as Gāyatrī or Sāvitrī (Ṛgveda III 62.10) is one of the most frequently recited texts of mankind. Over the course of time it has not only been personified as the mother of the Vedas – the oldest religious literature of South Asia –, but has even come to be venerated as a goddess. Today many consider it the most important, most efficacious, or holiest mantra of all. 

In "Gāyatrī: Mantra and Mother of the Vedas", Dominik A. Haas reconstructs the history of the Gāyatrī-Mantra for the first time, tracing it from 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. He shows how an inconspicuous verse became an emblem of Brahminical Hinduism and presents the processes that led to its deification. To this end, he not only subjects passages from more than one hundred source texts in Vedic and Sanskrit to philological-historical analysis, but also draws upon perspectives and insights from religious studies. 

The Gāyatrī-Mantra plays an important role in contemporary Hinduism as well as in modern yoga and alternative spiritual currents around the globe. This book therefore not only contributes to South Asian studies and religious studies, but is also of interest to a wider readership.

Die zehn Beiträge zu diesem Sammelband basieren auf Vorträgen, die auf dem Symposium „Transmission and Tradition – The Meaning and the Role of 'Fragments' in Indian Philosophy“ gehalten wurden, das als österreichisch-japanische Kooperation an der Shinshu-Universität in Matsumoto, Japan, stattfand. Ausgehend von der stark ausgeprägten Intertextualität vormoderner indischer Gelehrtenkulturen befassen sich die Beiträge eingehend mit philologischen und historischen Problemen, die durch „Fragmente” aufgeworfen werden, also durch Textpassagen, die in ihrer Gesamtheit verloren gegangene Werke repräsentieren oder vermitteln. Sie problematisieren auch den Begriff „Fragment” als solchen. Der Band spannt einen Bogen über verschiedene religiös-philosophische Traditionen, darunter Buddhismus, Nyāya und Mīmāṃsā, und entwickelt dabei auch methodologische Richtlinien für die systematische Sammlung, Einordnung und Präsentation von Fragmenten. The ten contributions to this collected volume are based on papers that were presented at the symposium “Transmission and Tradition – The Meaning and the Role of ‘Fragments’ in Indian Philosophy,” which was held at Shinshu University in Matsumoto, Japan, as an Austrian–Japanese cooperation. Drawing on the rich intertextuality of premodern Indian intellectual culture, the papers conduct in-depth investigations into philological and historical problems raised by textual ‘fragments’, by passages that record or represent works lost in their entirety. This volume provides the first modern translation of the recently found original Sanskrit text of Dharmakīrti’s Hetubindu (ca. 600 CE), the first Indian work of pure logic. The concise definitions and explanations of the central terms are enriched by several extensive digressions, such as on the pervasion (vyāpti) in the proof of momentariness of entities, with his conceptions of causality, and on the nature of non-perception or negative cognition (anupalabdhi), as well as by the supplement of a refutation of Īśvarasena’s theorem of six characteristics for a logical reason (ṣallakṣaṇahetu). The translation aims at making the content available to specialists in Indian epistemology and also to philosophers and logicians in general who have no knowledge of classical Sanskrit. It is provided with a short introduction and a detailed structural outline.

Tilleman vereint in dem Band „Views from Tibet“ Artikel aus drei Themengebieten: tibetanisch-buddhistische Logik, die Philosophie der Mitte sowie indigene tibetanische Schriften, die die Struktur der tibetanischen Sprache analysieren. Frühere Versionen von bereits veröffentlichten Artikeln wurden überarbeitet und aktualisiert, das letzte Kapitel wurde neu hinzugefügt. Zum Verständnis der tibetanischen Perspektive ist ein differenziertes indologisches Wissen notwendig, weswegen sich die Beiträge vielfach auf Texte des indischen Kanons beziehen, wenn vorhanden in Sanskrit. Darüber hinaus geht der Autor den Einflüssen auf die vergleichende Philosophie, Logik und Linguistik nach. Dharmakīrtis Sambandhaparīkṣā ist seit langem bekannt durch ihre tibetischen Übersetzungen und zahlreiche Zitate in Sanskrit. Ein jüngst entdecktes Sanskrit-Manuskript aus dem Kloster Drepung und Hideomi Yaitas Identifizierung der drei letzten Strophen in Sanskrit legten eine neue Edition des vollständigen Textes nahe. Dieses Drepung-Manuskript enthält auch den Kommentar, die Sambandhaparīkṣāvṛtti, der bisher Dharmakīrti zugeschrieben wurde, aber hier, und begründbar, seinem Schüler Devendrabuddhi zugeschrieben ist. Den kritischen und diplomatischen Editionen dieser Texte ist auch eine neue kritische Edition der tibetischen Übersetzung beigegeben, weil Frauwallner für seine Edition von 1934 nur die Version von Narthang benutzen konnte.

Gegenstand des Werkes ist eine Widerlegung aller Arten von Verbindung (sambandha), einschließlich der Kausalitätsbeziehung, die in den verschiedenen indischen philosophischen Systemen als in Wirklichkeit existierend angenommen wurden. Für Dharmakīrti sind diese Verbindungen nicht in Wirklichkeit (vastutaḥ) gegeben, sondern nur vorgestellt (kalpita). In der Einleitung wird die Bedeutung dieser Widerlegung für Dharmakīrti’s Logik hervorgehoben.

Damit ist ein zentrales Stück in der langen Geschichte indischer sambandha-Theorien von Patañjali und Bhartṛhari bis zu Utpaladeva und Abhinavagupta in seinem originalen Sanskrit wiedergewonnen.

 Dharmakīrti’s Sambandhaparīkṣā was already well known through its Tibetan translations and numerous quotations in Sanskrit before a newly found Sanskrit manuscript from Drepung monastery and Hideomi Yaita’s identification of the last three strophes in Sanskrit allowed for a new edition of the complete text. This Drepung manuscript also contains the commentary Sambandhaparīkṣāvṛtti hitherto ascribed to Dharmakīrti, but in this manuscript, and well acceptable, ascribed to his pupil Devendrabuddhi. To the critical and diplomatic editions of these texts, a new critical edition of the Tibetan translations of both is added, because Frauwallner for his edition of 1934 could use only the version of Narthang.

Subject of Dharmakīrti’s work is the refutation of all types of relation (sambandha), including the relation of causality, that were assumed by various Indian philosophical systems to exist in reality. For Dharmakīrti these are not given in reality (vastutaḥ), but only conceptually constructed (kalpita). In the introduction the import of this refutation for Dharmakīrti’s logic is highlighted. 

Thereby a center-piece of the long history of Indian sambandha-reflections from Patañjali and Bhartṛhari onwards to Utpaladeva and Abhinavagupta is now available again in its original Sanskrit.
