Das elektromagnetische Spektrum der Sonne umfasst einen großen Wellenlängenbereich und einen Teil dieses Spektrums nimmt die solare Radiostrahlung ein. Das Buch befasst sich mit der Dekameter Radiostrahlung der Sonne, gemessen von den für diesen Zehnmeter-Bereich  weltgrößten Radioteleskopen UTR-2 und URAN-2 in der Ukraine. Die mit bislang höchster Sensibilität erfassten neuesten Radioburst-Beobachtungen wurden in dynamischen Spektren erfasst, in Radioburst-Typen klassifiziert und hinsichtlich der Plasmadynamik in der solaren Korona analysiert. Somit beinhaltet dieses state-of-the-art Buch eine konzentrierte Zusammenfassung moderner Entdeckungen der solaren Radiostrahlung im Frequenzbereich von 8 bis 32 MHz und bietet ein ideales Fundament für aktuelle Radiomessungen von Raumsonden, wie z.B. Solar Orbiter. The electromagnetic spectrum of the Sun comprises quite a range of wavelengths, and part of it takes the solar radio emission. The book contains the decameter radiation of the Sun, in the 10-meter regime observed by the world-largest radio telescopes UTR-2 and URAN-2 in the Ukraine. By up to now unmatched sensibility the most recent radio burst measurements were recorded in so-called dynamic spectra, classified in types of radio bursts, and analysed with regard to plasma dynamics in the solar corona. Thus, this state-of-the-art book comprises a concentrated summary of modern discoveries of the solar radio emission in the frequency range of 8 to 32 MHz, and provides an ideal basis for current radio observations by spacecraft as, e.g., Solar Orbiter.

The 7th International Workshop on "Planetary, Solar and Heliospheric Radio Emissions" is the continuation of an established tradition: This PRE VII conference followed previous successful international workshops held at Graz, Austria, in 1984, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2005. This 7th workshop in September 2010 offered again the unique opportunity to discuss the observations from Cassini at Saturn and to investigate the measurements by other spacecraft and from the ground of the Jovian, terrestrial and solar radio emissions, also including studies on radiation from exoplanetary sources.

Der 6. Internationale Workshop über „Planetare und Solare Radiostrahlung“ ist nun bereits eine etablierte Tradition: Diese PRE VI Konferenz war die Fortsetzung einer Serie erfolgreicher internationaler Workshops, welche in Graz, Österreich, in den Jahren 1984, 1987, 1991, 1996 und 2001 abgehalten wurden. Dieser 6. Workshop im April 2005 bot die einmalige Gelegenheit, die Beobachtungen der Raumsonde Cassini, welche sich Saturn näherte, zu diskutieren, sowie die Messungen nach dem Einschwenken in den Saturn Orbit am 1. Juli 2004, zu analysieren. Eine Reihe von Beiträgen befasst sich mit diesen neuen Erkenntnissen, insbesondere mit der Saturn Radiostrahlung SKR und den Saturn Electrostatic Discharges (SEDs), Blitzphänomenen in der Saturn-Atmosphäre. Jedoch werden auch andere planetare Radiokomponenten von der Erde und von Jupiter behandelt, letztere auch unter dem Aspekt eines großen Ereignisses und Jahrestages: Im April 2005 sind es genau 50 Jahre seit der unerwarteten und überraschenden Entdeckung von Jupiter als Radiostrahler, entdeckt von Bernie Burke und Ken Franklin. Beide haben entsprechende Beiträge und persönliche Erinnerungen für diesen Proceedingsband bereitgestellt, Bernie war selbst am Workshop anwesend. Solare Radiobursts, in vieler Hinsicht unterschiedlich zur planetaren Radiostrahlung, wird eingehend beschrieben, gerade auch im Hinblick auf die bevorstehende NASA Stereo Raummission, welche zum ersten Mal einen stereoskopischen Blick auf die Sonne und ihre Umgebung werfen kann. Der Proceedingsband „PRE VI“ wird mit einer CD-ROM mitgeliefert, welche alle vorangegangenen Workshops PRE I bis VI umfasst und somit eine beinahe vollständige Abdeckung dieses Forschungsgebietes über mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte bereitstellt. The 6th International Workshop on Planetary and Solar Radio Emissions" is now an established tradition: This PRE VI conference was a continuation of successful international workshops held at Graz, Austria, in 1984, 1987, 1991, 1996, and 2001. This 6th workshop in April 2005 offered the unique opportunity to discuss the observations from Cassini approaching Saturn and to investigate the measurements retrieved during the first orbits of Cassini around Saturn after Saturn Orbit Insertion on July 1, 2004. A number of contributions deal with these novel findings putting Saturn and its radio wave phenomena, in particular the Saturn Kilometric Radiation SKR and the Saturn Electrostatic Discharges SEDs (lightning phenomena in Saturn’s atmosphere), into the focal point of interest. However, other planetary radio components from Earth and Jupiter have also been addressed, the latter under the aspect on the occasion of a great anniversary: April 2005 was almost exactly 50 years after the serendipitous discovery of Jupiter as a radio emitter, by Bernie Burke and Ken Franklin, both with contributions of personal reminiscences in this proceedings, and Bernie personally attending the workshop. Solar electromagnetic radiation, in many aspects different with regard to planetary radio emission, was highlighted by the upcoming NASA Stereo mission which will, for the first time provide a stereoscopic view of the sun and its environment. The volume "PRE VI comes along with a CD-ROM covering all previous workshops PRE I through VI and provides an almost complete coverage of this research topic over more than two decades.

From the Foreword:

The present 5th International Workshop on "Planetary and Solar Radio Emissions" was held shortly after the flyby of Cassini past Jupiter in December 2000, when the Jovian magnetosphere and its interaction with the solar wind were monitored for the first time by two spacecraft, Galileo in orbit around Jupiter and Cassini at a flyby distance of about 136 Jovian radii, crossing the Jovian bow shock several times. The ever increasing number of contributions, however, did not extend to all known radio planets but rather focused on Earth and Jupiter, and on the Sun as an additional radio source in our solar system. This may certainly have changed by the time Cassini reaches the Saturnian realms.

Like the previous four volumes which have appeared in the "Silver Series" of the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press, the present proceedings without doubt define the latest state of knowledge in this discipline.

When we organized the first International Workshop on Planetary Radio Emissions in the summer of 1984, following the 25th COSPAR meeting held at Graz, we hardly expected this workshop to become somewhat of a tradition. The enthusiastic acceptance by the relatively small but highly active community led us to hold the second one in September 1987 and the third workshop in 1991. The intimate size of the workshop with enough time for discussions and social get-togethers formed a close bond among the members of this community over the years. There has been a continuing growth in subjects discussed at these workshops. Whereas the first one concentrated on the first radio planet, Jupiter, it also dealt with Earth and initial results of Saturn. By the second and third workshop Uranus and Neptune had joined the radio planets in our solar system as the results of the Voyager 2 fly-by of these planets. The most recent fourth workshop held in September 1996 expanded the themes concerned with all five radio planets by adding new results from the Galileo und Ulysses missions. The proceedings of these workshops appeared in bookform under the title Planetary Radio Emissions; the present one is the forth volume (PRE IV) appearing in the "Silver Series" of the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press. Like the previous three volumes the present one is also expected to become a "standard" in this discipline, containing the most-up- to-date state of knowledge in theory and observation of planetary radio emissions. We hope that this volume, as the previous ones, will become the compendium in this field until new observations and ideas might urge us to convene another Graz-Workshop.

The International Workshop on Radio Emissions from Planetary Magnetospheres at Graz by now has become somewhat of a tradition. The present, third workshop was held at a time when, with the Voyager 2 flyby of Neptune the number of radio planets in our solar system has finally risen to five. This workshop, as the past ones, has provided the international community working in this discipline an opportunity to present and discuss the observational and theoretical aspects of nonthermal planetary radio emissions and their contribution as a diagnostic tool for planetary magnetospheres in general. The present volume contains edited versions of the papers presented at the workshop; its publication was again made possible through the generous support of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The organizers and editors also wish to express their gratitude for financial support to the Austrian Space Agency (ASA), NASA, the City of Graz and the Provincial Government of Styria and especially want to thank the University of Graz for again hosting this workshop. We hope to contribute the now established tradition of the Graz workshop on planetary radio emissions at some appropriate time in the future.

The first internationalWorkshop on Planetary Radio Emissions was held in the summer of 1984 at Graz, following the Twentyfifth COSPAR meeting. The enthusiastic acceptance by the scientific community in this field encouraged us to organize this second workshop. In the intervening two years, Uranus was added to the list of radio planets, and results of the Voyager 2 observations could be included in this workshop's presentations and discussions. Observational results in general, as well as theoretical aspects of source mechanisms have also received further attention. Thus, the present workshop provided an excellent opportunity to assess the current status of research in planetary radio emissions. This volume contains edited versions of the papers presented at the workshop; its publi- cation was again made possible through the generous support of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The organizers and editors wish to acknowledge with thanks the financial support by the Austrian Space Agency (ASA), the City of Graz, the Observatory of Paris, the Provincial Government of Styria, and to thank the University of Graz for hosting this workshop. In 1989 the flyby of Voyager 2 at Neptune will probably add another planet to the list of radio planets. Thus, following an appropriate time interval, a new assessment of all known radio planets may be in order and with it a third workshop to follow the already established tradition.
