Dieses Buch der Reihe VLACH (Vanishing Languages and Cultural Heritage) ist die erste tiefgreifende soziolinguistische Analyse der im Osten Serbiens lebenden-Gemeinschaft der Vlachen und ihrer Sprache, dem vlachischen Rumänisch. Es stellt neue Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der Sprachideologie, dem Online-Gebrauch von Minderheitensprachen sowie der linguistic landscapes und Sprachpolitik vor und bietet dem Leser ein vielseitiges Bild des Zustandes und Gebrauchs der Sprache, die von den Vlachen im Osten Serbiens gesprochen wird, sowie von den Ideologien, die sie begleiten. Auf der Grundlage ausführlicher Feldstudien und detaillierter Auswertung von Texten über die Gemeinschaft sowie von Texten ihrer Vertreter und der Analyse sozialer Medien zeigt das Buch, wie die Sprache Identität formt, Ideologie beeinflusst, zu Konflikten führt und die linguistic landscape prägt.

Das Buch erscheint an einem Wendepunkt der Geschichte dieser Gemeinschaft: Maßnahmen zur sprachlichen Wiederbelebung und der Prozess fortdauernder Standardisierung teilen die ohnehin ideologische geteilte Gesellschaft der Vlachen noch weiter. Es ist unklar, ob diese Veränderungen in den kommenden Jahren die immer noch existierenden Stereotypen über die Sprache und ihre Sprecher ändern, und ob sie zu stärkerem Gebrauch und mehr Sichtbarkeit für das vlachische Rumänisch führen können. Wegen seines breiten Ansatzes ist das Buch sowohl für Soziolinguisten als auch für Ethnographen, die zu romanischen Varietäten und Minderheiten in Serbien und auf dem Balkan forschen, als auch für Mitglieder der Gemeinschaft selbst, von Interesse.

 Published as a volume within the VLACH (Vanishing Languages and Cultural Heritage) series, this book represents the first in-depth sociolinguistic analysis of the Vlach community living in Eastern Serbia and of the language spoken by this community, Vlach Romanian. By integrating advances in the fields of language ideology, the online use of minority languages, linguistic landscape research, and language policy and planning, the book offers the reader a multi-faceted image of the state, status, and use of the language spoken by the Vlachs of Eastern Serbia, as well as of the ideologies accompanying it. Based on extensive fieldwork, detailed coverage of the texts written about and by the community, and relevant analysis of social media sites, this book generates insights on how the language shapes identity, influences ideology, sparks conflict, and impacts the linguistic landscape.

This book is being released at a turning point in the history of the community: the revitalization measures and ongoing standardization process is dividing the ideologically divided Vlach society even more. In the coming years, it remains to be seen whether these changes will be able to challenge the stereotypes regarding the language and its speakers that still persist and whether these changes will bring about the greater use and visibility of Vlach Romanian. Due to the multiple aspects covered, the book will be of interest to sociolinguists and ethnologists working on Romance varieties and minorities in Serbia and more generally in the Balkans, but also to the members of the Vlach community.

The Vlachs of Eastern Serbia: Language and Society

Das Buch bietet eine einzigartige Zusammenstellung von Erzählungen auf Mixe, einer Sprache der Mixe-Zoque-Sprachfamilie, die in Sierra Norte im mexikanischen Staat Oaxaca gesprochen wird. Die bisher unveröffentlichten Texte sind Zeugnisse dieser Sprache und Kultur und entstanden bei Feldstudien, die die Autorin 2018 und 2019 in Mixe-Gemeinschaften der Sierra Norte durchgeführt hat.

Das Buch umfasst eine Einführung, Erzählungen auf Mixe, Spanisch und Englisch sowie Vokabeln von drei Mixe-Varianten. Zwei dieser Varianten sind noch gar nicht erfasst und die dritte bisher nur begrenzt dokumentiert worden. Die Erzählungen im Buch sind authentisch und bieten mit ihren schillernden und vielfältigen Beschreibungen des Alltags und der Erfahrungen der Dorfbewohner, ihrer Märchen, Glaubenssätze und Lieder ethnografische Informationen und ein Portrait der Mixe-Kultur. 



Die gefundenen Narrative bieten attraktives und glaubwürdiges literarisches Material für Kinder und Erwachsene der Mixe-Gemeinschaften und können dem Erhalt dieser Sprache dienen. Es handelt sich um originäre, unverfälschte Erzählungen, die in enger Zusammenarbeit der Erzählenden mit der Autorin und Leiterin des wissenschaftlichen Projekts ausgearbeitet wurden. Die Erzählungen reichen von einfachen Texten über den Alltag bis hin zu komplexen Märchen und Legenden. 



Die Mixe sind ein indigenes Volk Mexikos, das in der Sierra Norte im nordöstlichen Hochland des Staates Oaxaca lebt. Die Selbstbezeichnung ist „Ayuujk jä'äy“, was „Ayuujk-Volk“ bedeutet. Sie sprechen Mixe-Sprachen (aus der Mixe-Zoque-Sprachfamilie), die noch nicht gründlich erforscht worden sind. Die Mixe sind nie unterworfen oder beherrscht worden; sie bewahren ihre Kultur und Sprache bis heute.

 This book is a unique collection of narratives in Mixe, a language of the Mixe-Zoquean group spoken in the Sierra Norte, state of Oaxaca, Mexico. This collection of texts, never before published, is a testimony to this language and culture and arose from the field work undertaken by the author in Mixe communities of the Sierra Norte in 2018 and 2019. 

The book contains introductory materials, texts in Mixe, Spanish, and English, and vocabularies of three Mixe varieties. Two of these varieties were completely undescribed and the third only moderately documented. The narratives presented here are authentic, and with their colourful and diverse descriptions of everyday life and villagers’ experiences, folktales, beliefs and songs, offer ethnographic information and portray Mixe culture.  



The narratives found in this book provide attractive and reliable literary materials for children and adults of the Mixe communities, and can be used for the development of literacy in this language. This is genuine narrative material, unadulterated, received from the speakers themselves and prepared in close partnership between the Mixe speakers and the author, the scholar leading the project. The narratives range from simple texts about everyday life to complex tales and legends. 



The Mixe are an indigenous people of Mexico who live in the Sierra Norte, the north-eastern highlands of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Their endonym is “Ayuujk jä'äy”, which means “the Ayuujk people”. They speak Mixe languages (Mixe-Zoquean family), which have not been thoroughly researched. Never conquered or dominated, the Mixe are culturally conservative and maintain their language to the present day.

Der vorliegende Band beschäftigt sich mit der Sprache und Kultur der "băiaşi" (Bajeschi) in Südungarn. Die von ihnen gesprochenen archaischen rumänischen Dialekte sind vom Aussterben bedroht, wobei die beiden Vernakularsprachen Arĝelean und Munĉan in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß betroffen sind. Das im Dorf Alsószentmárton gesprochene Munĉan befindet sich in der zweiten Phase des Sprachverfalls, in welcher die Minderheitensprache vom dominierenden Ungarischen aus dem Alltagsgebrauch in den häuslichen Bereich abgedrängt wird. Das im Dorf Gilvánfa und in Pécs gesprochene Arĝelean befindet sich in einer dritten Phase, die durch den Abbau des Vokabulars und den Verlust der Wortbildung gekennzeichnet ist – hier wurde die Sprache der Minderheit bereits durch jene der Mehrheit ersetzt. Faktoren wie Lebensumstände, soziale Strukturen, die Intensität des Sprachkontakts sowie ökonomische Abhängigkeit spielen eine entscheidende Rolle in der schrittweisen Ersetzung der Sprache der Boyash durch die Mehrheitssprache. Dieser Prozess spitzte sich in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und insbesondere nach dem EU-Beitritt Ungarns dramatisch zu. In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten hat das Arĝelean gegenüber dem Munĉan an Prestige gewonnen, wodurch es sehr wahrscheinlich ist, das Ersteres die dominierende Vernakularsprache der Boyash werden wird, sofern diese in den Arĝeleni-Sprachgemeinschaften überhaupt überlebt. The present book is concerned with the language and culture of the Boyash "Gypsies" in southern Hungary, who speak archaic dialects of Romanian and call themselves "băiaşi". Their varieties may be regarded as endangered, with the spoken vernaculars, Arĝelean and Munĉan, suffering different degrees of loss. The Munĉan vernacular investigated in the village of Alsószentmárton is most probably in the second stage of loss, during which the language of the majority increasingly spreads into the language of the minority, while the latter is used mostly within the family by the elderly. Hungarian is beginning to replace the Boyash language even in everyday life. The Arĝelean dialect from the village of Gilvánfa and from Pécs is in the third stage, which is characterized by the loss of vocabulary and the inability to create new words, as the majority language has definitively replaced the minority language. Factors such as way of life, social structures, the intensity of contact with the majority population, religion, the prestige of the language, the code function of minority languages and economic dependency have all played a decisive role in the progressive replacement of the Boyash language by the majority language Hungarian, a process that dramatically accelerated in the second half of the 20th century and especially after Hungary’s accession to the EU. In the last three decades, the Arĝelean vernacular has enjoyed greater prestige than the Munĉan and it is highly probable that the Arĝelean vernacular will become the dominant one if the Boyash language survives in the Arĝeleni communities.
