Literatur- und Geistesgeschichte des kroatischen Frühmittelalters

This book is an attempt at determining in all its complexity the starting point of the history of Croatian literature and spiritual life. The picture has been worked out like a mosaic. Special attention has been paid to questions of preserved or broken continuity. It was impossible to accomplish this in the frame of only one discipline. It proved necessary to apply philological scholarship in the original sense of the term, which does not exclude history and archaeology as well as the whole of cultural history, which it always includes in the interpretation of relevant texts. This is a manual intended to present the subject in its complex totality, to present it to the attention of scholarly readers and to pave the way to students who are interested in this field, which is of some importance not only for Croatian studies. The bibliographical notes, carefully presented, provide the reader with a handy approach to well informed consideration of the questions that are touched upon in this volume. Many of the sources are quoted literally and thus offer the opportunity to acquire reading experience with the epoch and the area to which this word is dedicated.
