Archäologie in Österreich

The anthology arose in a cooperation between the work group dedicated to profile development and the Archeological Advisory Board of the Austrian Ministry for Education, Science and Culture. The goal of the cooperation was to present the current status of archeological research at the universities, the state and national museums as well as at non-university research institutes in Austria. Through a questionnaire, each institute provided its current status and self-evaluation, and inquiries were made as to their plans for future research. In addition, the accomplishments of the years 1998 to 2003 were assessed. In a two-day conference from November 17–18, 2003, the topic was discussed in an open forum that included a group of national and international experts, and the suggestions of these specialists has been included in the publication. A handbook of the present status of Austrian archeological activities is thereby presented, and concurrently a view of the future of this area of cultural science has been made possible.
