Facetten meines Lebens

Facetten meines Lebens
Optimismus, Selbstvertrauen und manchmal Glück. Eine Autobiografie. Aus dem Englischen von Sebastian Vogel
1. Auflage, 2022
Martin Karplus was born in Vienna in 1930 but fled Austria in 1938, shortly after Hitler marched into Vienna. He and his family emigrated to Switzerland, then France and finally to the United States, where he studied at Harvard University (BA) and Caltech (PhD). He later returned to Harvard as a professor and in 2013 was awarded the Nobel Prize for the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems, together with others. "In this inspiring book, Martin Karplus masterfully celebrates a saga of awesome science and challenges future prospects." (Dudley Herschbach, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 1986) ''This engaging life story of an accomplished ornithologist, photographer, chef, political ‘subversive‘, Nobel Prize-winning chemist, and humanitarian is rich in words and images. Martin shows us the world through his eyes, with an exceptional clarity of thought and ability to see the essence of things. His account of people, places, and achievements, and his vision of what the future holds, convey an optimistic and compassionate view of our world.'' (John Straub, Boston University, USA) “In this book, Martin Karplus gives a very lively account of his life. Having grown up in a large Jewish family in Vienna and been driven out by the Nazis in 1938, he went on to have an impressive career in the USA, becoming a world-famous scientist. Whether talking about his curiosity in connection with science, his passion for photography, or his experiences with famous chefs, Martin Karplus’s descriptions make this book a truly worthwhile read, especially for the young generation.” (Anton Zeilinger, Austrian Academy of Sciences)
