Der Wall von Stillfried an der March
Von der Palisade zur mächtigen Befestigung der späten Urnenfelderzeit
1. Auflage, 2025
This publication is the first comprehensive presentation of the rampart of the Late Bronze Age hillfort at Stillfried (1000–800 BC). The fact that the settlement area was fortified with a ring-shaped wall underlines the importance of the site. For topographical reasons, the fortification was built to be particularly thick and strong on the western side. The investigations of the western rampart were carried out by Fritz Felgenhauer, with three sections excavated between 1969 and 1983. The fortification consists of two distinct phases, with the second rampart being built on the burnt remains of the previous one. Both had a ditch in the west, while the rampart included a wall of earth and wooden log boxes filled with earth. One of the characteristic features at the Stillfried site is a construction within the younger fortification that connects the wooden boxes with the earth wall, creating an impressive rampart with a width of nearly 8 m. At the top, the entire wall is terminated by a wooden battlement at a height of 3–4 m. A wooden palisade probably preceded the first rampart phase. The construction of the rampart at Stillfried is comparable with others of the Late Urnfield period, but impresses with the excellent state of preservation, especially of the wooden logs. The numerous photographs show details such as fire exposure of the logs and woodworking traces. Also presented in the book are ovens uncovered at the foot of the inner side of the rampart in both phases. The rampart and settlement were destroyed by a great fire at the end of the Late Urnfield period, attested to by a layer of ash measuring up to 1.5 m. The study also includes a detailed research history of the site.
