The book BERUFSTHEATER IN PRAG 1680-1739" deals with a period of Czech theatre history that reaches from the earliest manifestations of professional theatre, at that time still predominantly German, to the founding of "In der Kotzen, the first permanent theatre in Prague. The only German-language history of theatre in Prague to date, Oscar Teuber´s work of more than a century ago, is based on but a fraction of the scholarly sources that are now available and consequently displays many factual gaps. Recent archival research has started to fill in these gaps, as a consequence of which it has now become possible to attempt an analysis of the repertory of the travelling theatre companies and their manner of performance. The numerous theatre posters surviving in Prague, which are reproduced here in their entirety, proved to be particularly valuable for the many relationships they revealed between individual titles and the extant manuscripts of the plays performed by the travelling troupes. Central to this investigation are questions dealing with the growing integration of professional theatre into the cultural life of Prague, the change in the makeup of audiences and patrons and the generation of a repertory that offers many points of comparison with other repertories of central Europe. The book also contains a tabular survey of the travelling troupes and their repertory, editions of three contemporary texts as well as numerous illustrations including critical commentary. more...
