Industrialised and standardised housing production changed the outward shape of many European cities dramatically in the second half of the 20th century. Prefabricated large-panel structures seemed a highly economical and efficient construction technique to eliminate the housing shortage and improve both the quality of housing and the quality of life for the population at large. Ever since their emergence, prefabricated large-panel developments were subject to growing criticism. Gradually, technological concepts began to displace urbanistic, architectural and cultural ones. Since that time, structural defects as well as social problems are considered concomitant attributes of prefabricated large-panel developments and thus have contributed to their negative image. Hence the central question must be: to what extent do the prefabricated large-panel developments of the 1960s to 1980s still meet the requirements of contemporary housing? These contributions shall start a new discourse involving science, the economy, architecture, politics and the public at large and cover five thematic focuses: Section A broaches the issue of the development of prefabricated large-panel housing from visions to implementation. Section B presents the most important typological characteristics, building und flat types of large-panel housing estates in Vienna and Bratislava. The contributions in section C deal with Housing culture and lifestyles in the era of prefabricated large-panel housing construction in Vienna and Bratislava. Section D discusses the negative and positive aspects of prefabricated large-panel housing, analyzes experts’ critiques and tenants’ opinions as well as the scientific approach of the project. Section E presents the results of the student competition “Prefabricated Housing Estates - Modern Dwellings for Tomorrow“, which was part of the research project. more...
