Word formation has been neglected, until now, in research on the acquisition of German, which is probably due to the particularly difficult conditions concerning the gathering of child data in this area of grammar. The present monographic treatment, in fact, is the first comprehensive treatment of the acquisition of German word formation by one German-speaking child until the age when she started school. The main focus of the book is on finding out which patterns of word formation have been acquired in which order during the period mentioned and how productivity of single patterns developed on the basis of the vocabulary taken over by the child from her caretakers. The book is not only relevant for linguists and developmental psychologists, but also for educationalists who are interested in the capacities of preschool and school children to create new words.
