Primarily using Germanised place names, this volume systematically and as comprehensively as possible reconstructs names of the now extinct medieval Slavic population in Lower Austria (including Vienna) and with them an important part of its vocabulary. The names are recorded in a dictionary and provided with references from written documents. Word- and name-forming contexts of Slavic names are explained in the glossary, and where necessary, Slavic geographic names and names of npersons or those borrowed from the Slavic language from outside (Lower-) Austria are mentioned for comparative and reference purposes. Further evidence enables approaches from several perspectives. The volume now available for Lower Austria is an achievement that can be regarded as an essential part of Slavic substrate research in Austria and of the science of Slavic-German names. It represents an urgently required and previously missing basis for further studies in this area and in the greater context of historical-comparative Slavic linguistics, and will also provide good services for the etymologisiation of names outside of Lower Austria. more...
