No other domain of paleoslavistics has undergone so great a change in recent decades as that of Glagolitic research. The discovery of new manuscripts, inscriptions and texts has greatly enlarged the source material and promises to yield - apart from extensions and corrections to our present state of knowledge - entirely new insights into these materials, which are so important for the medieval cultural history of the Slavs.rnEighteen contributions by notable authors from Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the USA present an overview of the present state of research of the Glagolica and the sources written in this earliest Slavonic script. Most of the contributions are the result of a symposium organised in September 1996 by the Department of Slavonic studies at the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which was dedicated to the development of Glagolitic literature from the Cyrillo-Methodian period up to the 17th century in its various regional branches and which, in addition to paleographical and codicological problems, also treated textological and linguistic topics.rnrnIn order to investigate further the history of the devlopment of the Glagolitic script, a round table was held in Freiburg im Breisgau in February 1997. A report of this discussion is contained at the end of this publication.rnrn
