In the history of Southeast Europe, Venice is usually considered a peripheral phenomenon, especially when it is compared with the great continental empires. From the perspective of Venetian history, the Eastern Adriatic and its hinterland formed an integral part of the Stato da Mar, but most recent research has only focussed on the Greek-speaking eastern areas. This volume brings together both perspectives, the history of Venice and of Southeast Europe, aiming at a comprehensive analysis of Venetian domination in the Eastern Adriatic. Special emphasis is laid on interdisciplinary work, including Ottoman studies, being done on both sides of the Adriatic. Albanian, Austrian, Croatian, German, Italian and Serb historians have contributed to this volume. The Eastern Adriatic under Venetian rule emerges as a historical space of its own.
