In 2003 the XIV. Symposium of the Society for Greek and Hellenistic Legal History took place in the Château of Rauischholzhausen in the near of Marburg.
About 40 scholars from Europe, Israel and the United States gathered for lectures and lively discussions. It goes without saying that the scholars represented a wide and interdisciplinary range of research, such as ancient history, economics and social history, classical philology and ancient history of law. nTraditionally no predominant subject was given so that the lectures encompassed issues from the early Greek history of law till the Byzantine epoch. This time the Hellenistic history of law in particular the one of Egypt from the Ptolemaic to the Byzantine time was stronger accentuated.
The following items to name but a few were discussed: the importance of scripture for the early legislation in the Greek and Oriental region, the Magistrates in classical Athens, the administration of the mines, the right of fishery, the administration of the temple goods, the role of the official seal of the Greek states, the regional and social differences concerning the certification of legal transactions and the legal and social background of the late Roman military jurisdiction according to the papyri. nInterested fields of research: ancient history of law, old history, social- and economics history, classical philology and papyrology.
