This volume of the „Iranisches Personennamenbuch“ (Lexicon of Iranian personal names), based on numerous preliminary studies by the author (among them three volumes of „Iranica Graeca Vetustiora“), presents a full collection and detailed interpretation of those personal names attested in the Greek literature of the classical period (i.e. before Alexander the Great), that are of Iranian origin, have entered Greek via an Iranian language or at least had been regarded as of Iranian provenance previously. So the book centres on the Achaemenid Empire. But there is no clear-cut demarcation line to the following period. The presentation of the names in principle is the same as in the earlier published volumes of the „Iranisches Personennamenbuch“: First comes a full listing of all references, then a sketchy prosopographical characterisation of the person(s) bearing the name, and finally the (partly quite thorough) section on the morphological and etymological interpretation of the name. The progress of onomastic studies in this field since F. Justi’s „Iranisches Namenbuch“ (1895) is consequently taken into account: The Greek texts are quoted from the latest editions, and the author made full use of the rich anthroponomastic evidence preserved in the languages of the Achaemenid Empire as well as of the names attested in younger Iranian languages. Full indexes make all the names accessible that are quoted by way of comparison
