The present work gives the reader a fascinating overall view of mining in history, of contexts and events from the golden age" of ancient Athens up to the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community as the start of the unification process in Europe. The topics dealt with in the book include: mining-history aspects of the supply of raw materials, mining traditions, the relationship between the history of mining and the history of earth sciences and the importance of mining for the development of modern Europe during the Renaissance. It analyses the impulse that Leibnitz gave to mining, reports on the Societät der Bergbaukunde ("Society of Mining Science) as the first internationally organised scientific association in the world, and follows the development of mining in Austria in the 19th and 20th centuries. It acknowledges the achievements of the International Mining Congress, including in the field of international understanding, and the re-establishment of the Societät der Bergbaukunde as the Society of Mining Professors, and finally emphasises the need for a careful exploitation of the earth's crust if mankind's future is to be secured. The richly illustrated work is addressed to lay persons interested in the fields of history and mining, and to experts from a variety of areas (in particular mining science, history, economics and earth sciences). The chapters of the book bear the titles: 1. Introduction and special features, 2. Europe through the ages, 3. Europe and Austria in the 16th century, 4. Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, 5. Austria and Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, 6. Further development.- A detailed bibliography and index of names.
