Ad fontes – to the sources – was the motto that marked the beginning of history as a science in the age of humanism around 1500. Does this still apply today in the age of the computer? Why is it still so difficult and tedious, although also profitable, to make sources in edited form available to research and a larger public? What is the significance of the increasing flow of information and the handling of sources for the political and cultural awareness of the present? How can decisions and tenable value judgments be made if sources are known always the result of a specific context of action from which their original purpose and their original objective can be derived, and if sources always only reproduce partial aspects of events? These are some of the problems that are raised in this volume. However, it also addresses questions about the contemporary forms and media of source editions, such as the use of electronic data media, as well as questions concerning the storage and archiving of the rich and rapidly growing source material.
