Even after the departure of the Austrian ambassador Mercy-Argenteau from Paris in the autumn of 1790 several lines of communication guaranteed that reliable information still reached the Chancery of State in Vienna. The secretary of the Austrian embassy in Paris, Franz Paul Zigeuner von Blumendorf, who acted as Austrian chargé d’affaires from October 1790 to May 1792, was one of the most important junctions. Looking after the secret correspondence of Mercy-Argenteau, who, since January 1791, co-directed Austria’s policy towards France from Brussels, especially after Mercy’s correspondence with Queen Marie-Antoinette and other informants, Blumendorf of course also had to report his superiors in Vienna on current developments in revolutionary France. It is this surprisingly calm and detailed reports to State Chancellor Prince Kaunitz that are now made accessible for the first time in a critical edition and integrated into the context of the Austrian information network in France.
