One hundred and fifty years have passed since the foundation of the Academy by Emperor Ferdinand I. Since then, the world has changed radically: monarchies have disappeared, empires collapsed. However, the supreme goal of the Academy remains unchanged: to promote the sciences to the best of its ability, from generation to generation, according to the conception each age had of the form that this support and promotion should take. Whereas until a few decades ago, this still took the form of a Learned Society, where the members pursued their scientific projects as individual researchers or together in small committees, research institutes with their own premises and staff have developed in addition to this approach.
