The Austrian Lexicon of Music prepared in five volumes by the Commission for Music Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is planned as a work of reference for the entire field of Austrian music. Under person, place and subject headings, it contains all the essential information for both scientific and practical purposes. Alongside the obvious entries (all the major and minor composers, performers, ensembles, series of events, regions, key words etc.), Vol. 3 also presents overviews (from Carnolia and Croatia through Lombardy to Lower Austria, from Kremsmünster to Mariazell) and, alongside the expected (from concerts to Ländler and military music), perhaps what might be unexpected (such as copyists, cultural policies, the music industry, museums) as well as what has been forgotten (e.g. art jazz, art whistlers, musicians’ language) and the unusual (e.g. noise instruments, song girls, mandolin orchestra or Jew’s harp). This volume also covers spas and summer resorts, peasant masses, monodies, multimedia, music aesthetics, Musikantenstadl, National Socialism, national style, New Year’s Concert, Nestroy, new music and notations. Plan of the edition: Vol. 1: A-F, Vol. 2: G-Kl, Vol. 3: Km-N, Vol. 4: O-Sch, Vol. 5: Sci-Z. Publication dates: yearly
