The library of the Department of Musicology at the University of Vienna possesses among its numerous special holdings a collection of more than 1100 opera libretti. These include numerous pieces which can be described as rarities, partly because they were printed before 1800 and partly because they were produced exclusively for particular opera houses and were thus published in verly limited editions. Thes libretti are almost exclusively Italian, and were purchased by Bernhard Paumgartner (1887-1971) for the library of the branch office of the Vienna department that existed in Florence during the last years of the war, and which found their way into the library in Vienna after the branch office was closed down after the war. more...
