The selected synopses of Viennese artists in medieval and early modern times present source material from archives in Vienna and Lower Austria that is mainly unpublished. Written in abridged versions they summarize the main content of each source; in the cas of quotations that have already been completely or partly published, recommendations for further reading can be found. Spanning the period of the late thirteenth century to 1530, the author concentrates on the administrative district of Vienna including the Inner City and the suburbs as well as the neibouring villages that became part of the city not until the late nineteenth century. Well known artists like Jakob Kaschauer, Hans Puchsbaum or Anton Pilgram are mentioned as well as artists to whom we cannot attribute any specific art object and whose activity in Vienna has been comletely unknown so far. We learn about th artists`biographies and their everyday life, about their social staturs and their economical situation by means of purchase and sale of real estate, by means of inheritances and promissory notes. The synopses inform of acquaintances and friendships, they report contracts and payments - a real treasure chest not only for history of art.
