This volume presents 60 charters from early medieval Rhaetia both in text and image for the first time. Alongside a revised and commented edition of the charters the volume provides a comprehensive introduction, that takes into account aspects of transmission and preservation, diplomatics, palaeography, society and culture. Nearly all of these charters dating between 745 and 975 are preserved as originals in the archives of the abbey of St. Gall. nnThe volume not only offers an overview of the development of the form and script of the charters, but also rich toponomastic and onomastic material. Deriving from neighbouring areas in the present day countries of Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, these charters reflect a practice going back to Roman antiquity. They illustrate life in an area still inhabited by a predominantly romanized population, and their concern for possessions transferred by sale, donations or wills. The wide-spread use of the written word forms the image of a distinguished diplomatic and palaeographic landscape. The monastery of St. Gall preserves the largest body of original charters from the early middle ages north of the Alps. This unique body of evidence allows an eccellent insight into the social, political and religious structures of an early medieval society. more...
