Around the year 1200 the Holy Roman Empire was shattered by the fierce struggle for the throne between Philip of Swabia, the youngest son of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, and the Guelph Otto IV., who had grown up at the English court of king Richard I. (Lionheart). The war between the two opponents lasted for ten years and ended abruptly when Philip was murdered by count Otto of Wittelsbach at Bamberg in June 1208. To mark the 800. anniversary of Philip´s death, the Institut für Mittelalterforschung of the Austrian Academy of Science – where the edition of Philip´s charters for the Monumenta Germaniae Historica is being prepared – and the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung held an international conference in May 2008. In 18 papers, the motives and the consequences of the assassination are investigated, as well as the principles and guidelines of Philip´s reign. The conflict that dominated all political activities in the Roman Empire at the time offers remarkable insights into the surprisingly varied means of negotiation, mediation and reconciliation. As both parties sought alliances with potentates outside the Empire, the struggle for the throne between Philip and Otto gained a truly European dimension.
