In over 200 catalogue numbers, the second volume of Mitteleuropäischen Schulen" describes the illuminated manuscripts of the Austrian National Library that were created in roughly the period from 1350 to 1410 in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The focal point of the contents of the volume is on the manuscripts with figural book ornamentation executed in body paint. The first of these are the codices produced by the Vienna Court Miniature Workshop and its closer surroundings. They are testimony to the renewed activity of scriptoria and book illuminators at the end of 14th century in Vienna and Lower Austria. Important individual works include the four World Chronicles illuminated in Austria and Bavaria, a Book of Lots in German (Middle Rhine/Hessen around 1370) and the so-call Alsace Book of Troy (Upper Rhine around 1390/1400). At the same time, a short description is presented of a large number of manuscripts with more simple ornamentation. more...
