The first volume of Central European Schools is the chronological successor to H. J. Hermann´s German Romanesque Manuscripts published in Leipzig, 1926, in the series Illuminated Manuscripts and Incunabula in the Austrian National Library. 154 „Gothic“ manuscripts in Latin or Middle High German originating from Austria, Germany and Bohemia from the mid-13th to the mid-14th centuries are described. Apart from information on codicology, provenance, bindings and contents, the individual catalogue descriptions contain detailed characterisations of the book ornamentation and explanatory remarks on assignment to a given historical style. The commentaries are accompanied by extensive illustrations in a separate volume containing 27 coloured and approximately 550 black and white illustrations which also include comparable examples in other libraries. In decorative forms, the transitional phase is characterised by the formation of a new type of initial - the pan-work initial - preserved in striking examples in numerous manuscripts contained in this volume. In addition to mansucripts illustrated by these intitials, there are several masterpieces containing drawings of figures, such as the two Regensburg psalters, as well as individual works such as the Viennese Willehalm and the Biblia pauperum from Klosterneuburg more...
