In the first half of the 19th century, cultural processes in Central Europe were intimately connected to the evolution of literary languages and national literatures, as well as the preservation of national identities. These developments were particularly significant for how the Slavic peoples of Central Europe saw themselves. The traumatic collective experiences of the 20th century that the young nation states of Central Europe had to deal with – wars, totalitarianism and economic coercion – led to the development of cultural exclusion and dissociation. The memory of a shared culture was suppressed and strategies evolved to strengthen national distinctiveness. The Vormärz-Slavica Project focuses on collecting references to Slavic countries and cultures in Metternich-era periodicals published in Vienna, especially non-political periodicals of a scholarly nature or for entertainment. Four volumes have been published to date: 1990: References to Russia in Viennese Vormärz- Periodicals (1805–1848); 1992: References to Poles and Ruthenians in Viennese Vormärz-Periodicals (1805–1848); 1994: References to the South Slavs in Viennese Vormärz- Periodicals (1805–1848); 1998: Supplement to Vol. I; 2004: References to Upper Hungary (Slovakia) in Viennese Vormärz-Periodicals (1805–1848). The material in these volumes is organized according to a critical inventory under the headings Literature and Writing, Linguistics, History, Educational Institutions, Religion, Law, Political Economy, and Natural Sciences.
