lt supposedly was in the late 1470s or in the early 1480s that the historically keen cardinal and patron Francesco Tedeschini Piccolomini (1437/39–1503) requested a revision of an older Vita Caroli Magni with regard to content and style of the monk and humanist Hilarion of Verona (ab. 1444– ab. 1484), as the older vita no longer proved to be topical. The humanist accepted the request and penned another vita of the Carolingian ruler. In doing so, Hilarion strongly relied on the 9th-century classical vita of Charlemagne by Einhard, but to a certain degree also on the Vita Caroli Magni as written by the Florentine humanist Donato Acciaiuoli (1428–1478) in 1461. Throughout the vita, the usage of quotations by Roman authors displays Hilarion’s endeavour to ensure an antique touch. The present study offers the critical and commented editions of both the Vita Caroli by Hilarion from Verona as well as the preceding letter of order by the cardinal Piccolomini. The edition of the vita is accompanied with a translation into German. In addition, a historical placement of the vita relating to the history of ideas has been attempted. Possibly, the text can be associated with the religious and political quarrel between the Holy See and Louis XI, king of France.
