Among the extant remains of ancient poetry appreciative descriptions of famous poets and their achievements are very rare appart from epigrammatic eulogies. During the Renaissance, however, praise of ancient poets, who were regarded as literary authorities, became a prominent theme in various literary genres (lyric encomia, elegiac lives, epyllia, lengthy epic eulogies). Nevertheless this theme has been neglected in learned discussions so far. In the present study a number of poetic works on Homer and Vergil are described and analyzed for the first time, comprising texts written by Italian humanists in the 15th and early 16th centuries. Special attention is given to Angelo Poliziano's Silvae „Manto and „Ambra, poetic praises of Vergil and Homer, which he used as introductions to lectures at the Studio of Florence. In addition to this, descriptions are given of two further poetic introductions to a lecture on Vergil and another on Homer, the Encomion Vergilii by Antonio Urceo and his Silva in principio studii, Carlo Marsuppini's dedicatory epistle to his translation of the Iliad and, finally, the Sosthyrides by Giorgio Anselmi (an imitation of both of Poliziano's Silvae in the form of a birthday poem on Vergil). In addition there are analyses of poetic versions of Vergil's biography as well as epigrams on Vergil and, as a supplement, poems appreciating other ancient poets (Horace, Ovid, Catullus). In this last group Piero Valeriano's Carpio and poetic histories of poetry prove to be especially interesting. — It can be shown by means of interpretation that the proper achievement of humanist authors is not to be found on the level of content, since their view of both Homer and Vergil is determined by ancient literary critics. They rather demonstrate their creative power by modelling traditional themes according to the high artistic standards of humanistic literature. more...
