Johannes Cassianus (ca. 360 - 430), presbyter in Gaul and author of the famous De institutis coenobiorum and the Collationes, is not only one of the most important witnesses to the early period of monastic life, but also, having spent quite a long time in several monasteries of Egypt and Palestine, an unequalled intermediary between the different monastic types of the Greek-speaking east and the Latin west: his influence on the Regula Benedicti for example is hardly to be overestimated. De incarnatione contra Nestorium, a work usually less known, is nevertheless one of the main sources of our knowledge about the theology of Nestorius. The edition of all the three texts by Michael Petschenig in 1886 (CSEL 13) and 1888 (CSEL 17) has been kept in high regard ever since as an excellent piece of editorial work and has therefore been accepted also by more recent editions nearly unaltered. The reprint of both volumes, which is presented here, contains the Prolegomena, the text and the critical notes of Petschenig’s edition stereotypically reproduced, whereas the indexes have been completely reworked by deletion of obsolete parts, by collecting a large amount of addenda especially to the so-called apparatus similium, and by being split into two equivalent parts, now added to each volume in order to make them more convenient for the reader.
