In 1975, the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press published the “Austrian Geographical Name Register”. This work was the world ’s first to implement in full the recommendations of the United Nations on the preparati- on of name registers. A working party of experts in toponymy has now set out to publish a new edition of this out of print work. The “Austrian Geographical Name Database” is a complete revision of the name register to satisfy today ’s requirements. It is work of reference for all those involved in the worlds of academy, economy and administration who require information about the location, spelling, pronunciation, administrative classification or category of a geographical object. It comprises around 7500 names.
