The 9th volume of the Tabula Imperii Byzantini treats the geographical space of the protobyzantine provinces of Paphlagonia and Honorias, i.e. the central Black Sea coast of Turkey with its hinterland. Following the proven scheme of the series, this publication contains a complete description of the historical geography of the two provinces. Based on mediaeval sources (Greek, Latin and, where necessary, Oriental) and on surveys, the author presents in detailed introductory chapters the physical geography, history, church history, economy as well as the traffic connections of the provinces mentioned during Byzantine times (ca. 300-1460 A.D.). The main part of the book consists of a catalogue in which - because of the continuity of settlement from imperial Roman times - all known historical geographical names (of places, waters, mountains etc.) as well as settlements, fortresses, churches etc. which are attested only archaeologically are listed in form of „lemmata“; from primary sources, secondary literature and the author’s observations at the spot, their local history is presented, the archaeological monuments are described and in part illustrated. A thematic map (scale 1:800.000) is added on which, apart from modern topographical entries, the Byzantine settlements, fortresses and isolated buildings are recorded, differenciated by colour according to periods and by shape according to the character of the entry; the Byzantine road and sea connections are shown as well.
