The internationally long awaited publication of TIB Lykien und Pamphylien is now available in three parts, in two text volumes and one picture volume. In more than one thousand individual location entries and presentations (lemmata), enriched by documentary illustrations and maps, the historical topography and geography of south-west Turkey – one of the richest landscapes of the antique and medieval world cultural heritage – have been brought together for the very first time. Nowhere else in the Mediterranean will one find such magnificent ruin sites in such a small area as in south-west Anatolia. The authors have examined the entire existing literature on the topic and undertaken numerous journeys of their own to the sites in order to create an extensive regional history of south-west Asia Minor – from its pre-Christian origins to the Age of Antiquity and the Byzantine Middle Ages to the early Ottoman Empire. Research into the history of the civilisation and the geography of settlements formed the basis for the very first individual town histories, among them Antalya and Myra, Perge and Side: historical cities that are nowadays focal points for tourists. Thanks to their excellent knowledge of the country, Hansgerd Hellenkemper and Friedrich Hild have presented a standard work, a landmark of historical country research as part of the Tabula Imperii Byzantini of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. more...
