When Kurt Weitzmann (1904–1993) published his Byzantinische Buchmalerei des 9. und 10. Jahrhunderts („Byzantine Manuscript Illumination of the 9th and 10th Centuries“) in 1935, it immediately became a landmark in the history of Byzantine art. Sadly, the work – printed in far too small numbers – was soon out of print, so that the original edition of Weitzmann’s work is now a true rarity. With the reprint, authorised by Kurt Weitzmann himself, this standard work on Byzantine art-history will once again become accessible to the scientific world. Furthermore, Weitzmann prepared a volume of addenda and appendices to the 1935 edition in which he uses his extensive research to expand and revise his original views and collects and analyses material not accessible to him in 1935. These addenda and appendices thus present the concentrated results of Weitzmann’s outstanding studies on the Byzantine book-art of the 9th and 10th centuries. Weitzmann was able to complete the work on the addenda and appendices before his death, so that they appear in the definitive form correspnding to Weitzmanns own intentions. The reprint of the 1935 edition and the addenda and appendices together form an important point of reference for anyone interested in Byzantine book-art and general culture of the 9th and 10th centuries, universally recognised as representing the high-point of Byzantine art. In order to give an opportunity to those libraries and scientists already owing Weitzmann’s 1935 publication to acquire the complete edition of 1996, the addenda and appendices volume will be printed in higher numbers then the reprint of the main volume so that it may also be bought separately.
