This book deals with the economic activity of a well-known family of Roman senators, Laecanii. It is rare for both written sources and excavations to provide information on an ancient family. The name of the gens Laecanius is known from stone inscriptions, from the works of Pliny the Elder and from amphora and tile stamps. rnThe olive-oil produced on the Istrian properties of the Laecanius family was shipped in amphorae to Northern Italy, Noricum, Pannonia and Raetia in amphorae produced in a workshop which was founded during the reign of Augustus. The figlina was found near Pula (Fasana), and many amphorae were unearthed in three villas on the island of Brijuni. The amphorae bore the stamps of the owner and the vilicus. On the basis of these stamps, it is possible to establish a chronology of the production, a difficult if not impossible undertaking in connection with most other sites. The first part of the book is concerned with the Fasana amphorae, amphora stamps, their chronology, and the owners of the workshop (after the Lacanius family died out, the Emperors took over the property). The villas on the island of Brijuni and the tools utilised during production are discussed in detail. The collection of amphorae provides new information regarding the foodstuffs trade in the northern part of the Roman Empire from the end of the 1st century B.C. to the end of the 2nd century A.D. The second part of the book (containing the drawings and the photographss of the 678 stamped amphorae) catalogues the available data. more...
