The phenomenon of regionalism is an important topic for Bronze Age archaeology in Cyprus. This has been the subject of the collection of papers appearing in this volume devoted to the Middle and Late Bronze Age period, before a unified island wide culture emerged towards the end of the 2nd Millennium B.C. The contributions reveal a broad spectrum of applied methods and analyses in various approaches of archaeological research. The initial paper by D. Frankel shows a theoretical treatment of “regionalism”. Studies about local developments are included. The evaluation of material groups, such as Plain White Handmade Ware and distribution patterns (Crewe) or the appearance of local structures (Steel, Eriksson) form the focus of interest, as well as the study of the decoration of White Painted Wares or White Slip Ware (Maguire). Analyses of materials of Plain Ware (Jacobs) or the question of pottery production of pithoi (Keswani-Schuster) and local distribution are also topics which have been considered as well as the ceramic development of the cemetery of Dheneia in its geographical environment (Webb). The particular matter of import vessels has been taken up by Georgiou, while Hadjisavvas focuses on local architectural observations. The contributions are the result of a workshop, which was organized by the editor of this volume for her studies of the department Cyprus on behalf of the Special Research Programme SCIEM 2000 during the 4th International Cyprological Congress. All ten papers clearly show how important it is to draw upon various sources of information and to utilize different criteria in order to understand the phenomenon of regionalism in its entire complexity.
