more information...

The present book intends to give readers a comprehensive idea of the ancient city of Perinthos-Herakleia situated on the north coast of Propontis and once the capital of the Roman province of Thrace. The present study includes all literary and epigraphic testimonies related to the city’s history, its inhabitants and historical geography, and also all inscriptions of the city and its territory. There is a short historical account of the city based on both literary and epigraphic evidence. The study starts off dealing with the geography and history of Perinthos-Herakleia and its territory. It deals with topographical evidence mentioned in inscriptions found in the territory of Perinthos and in relation to archaeological monuments also found in this territory. Reference is made to classical and medieval authors who wrote on the period between the time the city was founded and when it was conquered by the Ottoman troops. These deal with both important historical events in the city itself and the role the city played in the ecclesiastical history of Perinthos-Herakleia as a bishopric. Finally, there are epigraphic testimonies related either to the history of the city or to citizens living outside Perinthos. A major feature of this study are the 315 inscriptions from the city itself or its surrounding areas. And last but not least, there is a very detailed index at the end of the book, for readers to trace Greek, Latin and German names and words. more...
