The fifth volume in the series Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (CVA) Austria covers 123 objects of pottery kept in the Antikensammlung of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien; 122 of these items are unbroken or nearly complete, one item is fragmented. Although typically excavated more than 200 years ago the vast majority of these vessels are presented for the first time ever in this volume, with comparisons and references. All objects date to the classical period (5th and 4th century BC) and were produced in Attica, Greece. Many red-figured pots were used for storing oil and serving wine. They are decorated with animals and the depictions of everyday life. The volume also includes white ground lekythoi which were used in sepulchral rites. In addition to conventional methods, advanced laboratory techniques were applied for documentation in CVA Austria 5: 3D-laser resp. 3D-light stripe-scanner, multispectral measurements, X-ray, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), measurements in UV and IR light and microscopy. The Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (CVA) is an international research project for research and publication of ancient ceramics. The publication of the volumes lies in the responsibility of each member country.
