more information...

This volume deals with the occupational sequences and the material remains of three of the most important settlements in the Central Jordan Valley during the Middle and Late Bronze Ages: Pella, Tell Abu al-Kharaz and Tell Deir cAlla. An alternative approach to the publishing of important information is presented: the contributors had the opportunity to discuss the editor’s conclusions. In the first three chapters, the three sites are presented by the excavators. Chapter 4 is a preliminary conclusion in which Fischer presents his view. Chapter 5 gives the other two contributors the opportunity to respond to Fischer’s conclusions. Van der Kooij agrees with Fischer’s conclusions, whereas Bourke presents additional theories and interpretations although agreeing with Fischer on all major issues. In Chapter 6, Fischer includes Bourke’s response in his résumé, in which all the sites are synchronized locally, regionally and interculturally. It is obvious that the present volume is of major importance not only for the archaeology of the Jordan Valley and the Southern Levant but also for other related cultures such as those of Syria/Lebanon, Cyprus, Egypt and the Mycenaean sphere because of imports from these regions. Fischer’s revised terminology and chronology for the sub-division of the Late Bronze Age is used by all contributors. The interdisciplinary character of the publication is apparent. The integration of modern field archaeology and advanced scientific studies contributes to a better understanding of the dynamics of the vibrant societies of the Middle and Late Bronze Ages in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. The present volume also contributes to the chronological discussions of the SCIEM 2000 project, “The Synchronization of Civilizations in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Second Millennium B.C.” more...
