In his examination of cereal drying racks Zwerger introduces the diversity of a most significant technical device in the agricultural production cycle of cereals. Over a period of several centuries its development was formed and influenced by many factors. His research is not merely a structural analysis; backgrounds and conditions related to the economic and cultural history illustrate the 'how and why' of the many different developed and designed types. The author proves that identical conditions in East Asia and Europe to a large extent led to similar strategies in solving challenges. The simplest racks for drying cereals are two of a kind. The more complex they grew the more the hayracks’ structure and appearance resembled the patterns of the typical East Asian and European method of construction. Thus the cereal drying rack is presented as a fine specimen to explain structural principles of historic wood building methods. Despite the different development in building history the author is able to introduce a classification system that allows the comparison of East-Asian and European racks. Numerous photographs, analytical drawings and historical pictures help to describe even complicated technical details as simply as possible. Many of the objects analyzed by the author do not exist anymore. Hence some of the photographs and drawings are unique documents of historic buildings.
